TurboTax returns temporarily suspended on fraud concerns

The state of Minnesota has stopped accepting electronic filings by taxpayers using the popular TurboTax software, because of what it says are fraud problems that have been detected with filings.

"Some Minnesota taxpayers have recently found that when they log in to TurboTax to file their tax return, they see that a return has already been filed," said the state. The state says there has not been a breach of Department of Revenue computer systems, and that it is still accepting filings from tax preparers using professional versions of the Intuit software.

Media reports in Minnesota say that the state is in contact with other states about possible problems elsewhere.

My son successfully transmitted his state (Maryland) return using turbotax at 3:24pm this afternoon. Turbotax sent him a confirmation email on this.

It might be a problem with the code used to file Minnesota state income tax returns by the home version of TurboTax.

What is this State Income Tax Returns thing you speak of?

Sounds like a personal problem to me. Comes by not living in the right State.

Like Texas.

Make sure the IRS receives it.

I swear by TurboTax, but one year Intuit assured me it had been filed & paid but the IRS said it hadn’t. Neither budged. Had to pay a small penalty for being a month late.

He submitted his IRS (Federal) return earlier. IRS notified Turbotax they had received it and Turbotax sent him an email stating that. He checked at the IRS’s “Where’s My Refund” link and it shows they received it and it is in process”.

We’ve used Turbotax in our family (when you buy a turbotax home product you can use it for FIVE different returns - so we share) for about 10 years and never have had a problem.

“That’s me every year. And I hand address the envelope.”

And when you file by mail you know for certain just exactly what information you are “transmitting” to the IRS, unlike E-File.
The other thing that tickles me is all these people who have deluded themselves into thinking that the IRS is a good “savings bank,” and they see their refund as some kind of an “unplanned gift.”

That won’t fix the problem.

The person with your stolen identity will still use TT or other software to fill a return with all sorts of deductions and dependents you don’t have so you quality for the EITC and what not. They will get back 1000’s on a prepaid card.

You will get stuck with the mess and your mailed in return will be rejected.

So you seem to be tying this all to some kind of personal identity theft and not something related to stolen E-File returns? To my mind you’re talking about a completely different problem. You are simply saying that an identity thief could use TT to file a fraudulent return using your stolen identity. I was given to understand that identity thieves had directly stolen E-Filed returns. What am I missing here?
