Everybody. Get a copy of the Koran, preferably a translation from an Arabian publishing company. Read it. You will understand and know what now you surmise. There is no room for allegory in the Koran. It is all straight talk.

#1: During the period of Islam’s initial expansion, beheading, raping and looting were the standard military methods of the time. All armies used them. The Muslim armies just used them more effectively. To be sure, these aren’t military tactics at all, except for their peripheral benefits of terrorizing the enemy. Just as for ISIS today, they’re more along the lines of morale builders for your own troops and recruiting tools.
$2: Your jihad graphic shows (I assume) every major jihad victory. Your Crusade graphic appears to show only the battles of the First Crusade, not even all those of the entire “crusade” period, which had battles fought in North Africa, Cyprus, Egypt, Constantinople, etc.
To be fair, you’d have to also show all the battles by which the jihadis were forced out of Spain, the Balkans, Italy, etc.

Here's one way to think of it. Our Civil War was in essence fought over what the genuine America was or would become. Both sides had entirely logical reasons for their belief that their POV was that of the "real" America.
Since neither side would back down, the only way to settle what "the genuine America" would be was the way it was settled.
Same for Islam. Only Muslims can define what "real Islam" is and that definition will almost certainly be settled only by war.
This is absolutely the conclusion I come to, i.e. that it’s the lunatics who are interpreting that religion correctly. What the 85% or 90% do with their lives almost doesn’t matter.

They already did that back in the 8th-9th centuries. This is why the "traditional" understanding of the Qur'an, the ahadith, the sunnat, the isnad, and the rest are accepted as "traditional."
To understand what is being said in the koran, you must read the Hadiths and Sunnahs which chronicle the life and sayings of Mo, these are: Talibari, Muslim, Isaq and Bukhari; Hadiths are Mohammed’s word to his followers. The Sunnahs are the history of Muhammad whose motto (sic) was “Kill, kill, kill” ... lest anyone confuse him with Jesus ...
Reading the koran alone, no matter the translation, will tell you nothing about the true nature, intent, purpose, and methods of Islam - without them you are reading a jumble of suras whose meaning and validity is lost.
For instance the koran was given in two parts, the first part was invalidated by Mo. However, the first part is mixed throughout the book. The first part was mostly plagiarized from the Torah and the Bible. There is only room in Paradise for 72,000 according to Mo. The 72 virgins are a mistranslation from the old Syriac which referred to a very valuable commodity in Mo’s time: white raisins ...
If you think you are safe because you are not a Christian or a Jew - know you are, like them a kafir - an unbeliever, and will be killed out of hand by true muslims like ISIS; you do not get a choice. And your daughter and wife will be sent to a harem ... your young son will be castrated and become a eunuch in some muslim’s harem.
Understand Islam once it senses weakness is relentless and extremely brutal. As ISIS has said the deaths on countless millions will be necessary to bring the world to Dar al-Islam, and then bring all of humanity to Paradise (aka extinction - the ultimate Islamic goal).

When I was a child in Istanbul I heard about the raisins from a Turk, Feti Bey, who was talking to my father. The Turks then, at least the urban middle class, were Moslem on Friday. The copy of the Koran I currently have has all the abrogations marked in the footnotes. The Torah in the Koran is of course pretty jumbled and re-edited with some tall tales added in. A huge part of Koran is the insistence that Christians and Jews got it all wrong. The Prophet doth protest too much.
I have been telling people this stuff about the Islamic War and its relentlessness for years. It began 1400 years ago and will end when all people on Earth are Moslem or none are.
This president is working hard to put America on the path to Islamization. Every country that has admitted the Moslems other than as a few merchants and diplomats, becomes, after a time Moslem. Russia to dater is an exception and maybe Ethiopia, but Russia deals with Moslems as infidels must deal with Moslems. Russia, however is on a Demographic slide and will probably lose out to the Chinese and the Turkic Moslems. If America doesn't take things in hand and expel the Moslems altogether then China bids fair to be the last bastion of Christianity. Crazy? Chinese are becoming Christian, Catholic and Protestant, at a pretty rapid rate and China, like Russia deals with its Moslems properly.

Some Moslems are nice until the Imam has a talk with them. ALL are potential jihadists. I will not permit my wife to go to a Moslem doctor. One never knows when he will get that call.
Quite right. Which is why if Muslims object to ISIS being the face of their religion presented to the world, they need to take the lead in squashing it.
IOW, Muslims can redefine what Islam is, if they choose to. If they choose not to fight ISIS, then by default ISIS will define Islam.

In any case, it is idiotic for non-Muslims to think they have any input at all on “what Islam is.”
Similarly, Jim Jones and others have claimed to be Christians, at least at times, and did some pretty horrific things. If today’s Christians did not strenuously oppose their activities, which we did, then non-Christians throughout the world would reasonably conclude that they were an accepted part of the Christian world.
If Muslims don’t want Christians and other to conclude that ISIS and its activities are acceptable to Muslims, they’ll have to demonstrate that by their words and, more importantly, their actions.
I believe I heard that in 10 years China will have more Christians than the US, and in 20 years after that more than the rest of the world combined.
Even better, get a copy of Bill Warner’s An Abridged Koran and read that cover to cover first. There are tricks to making the translated Koran easy to understand and An Abridged Koran is definitely worth your time and money as a preface. There are two other texts that are equally important: The Sira and The Hadith and Dr. Warner provides easy to read translations for both. You can find them all on Amazon.
I agree with you, arthurus. We need to read the writings in their original context so we can understand what’s happening. It is right there in the texts and it is very plainly spelled out.
