Many liberals once supported Israel. Liberal icon and martyr Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY) gave his life for his support of the country. Many anti-Vietnam war protesters that I knew supported Israel because, unlike Vietnam—in their view—Israel was a democracy.
The fact that it was ruled by socialists until 1987 may have added to Israel’s appeal among liberals.
They weren’t very vocal when Kurt Waldheim had the UN declare Zionism (the notion of the existence of a Jewish state in the first place) “racism” in 1975.
Menachem Begin and Likud were socialists in the 70s? Can’t base a supposition like that totally on capitulation to Carter’s folly.
