POLICE: Two arrested after 5-year-old forced to sleep with ball-and-chain

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police say two people are facing criminal abuse charges after they forced a five-year-old child to sleep shackled to a ball-and-chain.

According to court documents, it happened on Feb. 7 when a Kentucky State Police trooper visited a home on School Hollow Road in Milton, Kentucky, to check on the welfare of a five-year-old boy.

When the trooper arrived, he says he was met by 32-year-old Darrin W. McDaniel, who was standing on the porch. McDaniel's girlfriend, 31-year-old April Vantyle, arrived a few minutes later. The trooper informed them that he was there to check on the welfare of McDaniel's 5-year-old son, who was at the home. McDaniel and Vantyle gave troopers permission to speak with him, according to an arrest warrant.

The boy allegedly told the trooper that he sleeps behind a couch, and that his father, McDaniel, put a ball and chain on his leg each night. The child even showed the trooper where the ball and chain were anchored to the couch, according to court documents. Police say the boy told them Vantyle also attached the ball and chain on at least one occasion, and police say when confronted Vantyle admitted that she'd known about the arrangement for at least two months.

The child told police he urinates in his bed because he isn't allowed to leave, according to an arrest report.

McDaniel allegedly confessed to the practice.

"He stated that he did this a couple times to discipline his son, to keep him safe, and to scare him at times," an arrest report states. "He stated his son did not like to listen to him."

Police say they also found marijuana inside a lock box. Before they opened it, McDaniel had told police anything inside was his.

McDaniel was arrested that same day.

Vantyle was taken into custody on Monday.

Both McDaniel and Vantyle are charged with criminal abuse.

Goes on all the time around where I live. I’ve often said parents should be required to have a license before they procreate. It’s sad how many idiotic people pop out kids, but many truly wonderful parents can’t have children.

Where do you get a real ball and chain these days?

Even Amazon doesn’t carry them!

Ebay has them. Seriously. They have both the fake/costume ones and real ones. (before you think I’m into some weird 50 shades of grey shenanigans... I looked it up after you posted the question!) Just making myself clear here.

Captain Obvious says... these two @$$holes each need a ball and chain of their own...

Maybe something else about the weather headed that way right now, or about a nice swim somewhere...

JANIS JOPLIN

“Ball And Chain”

Yeah! Alright!

Sittin’ down by my window,
Honey, lookin’ out at the rain.
Lord, Lord, Lord, sittin’ down by my window,
Baby, lookin’ out at the rain.
Somethin’ came along, grabbed a hold of me,
And it felt just like a ball and chain.
Honey, that’s exactly what it felt like,
Honey, just dragging me down.

And I say, oh, whoa, whoa, now hon’, tell me why,
Why does every single little tiny thing I hold on goes wrong ?
Yeah it all goes wrong, yeah.
And I say, oh, whoa, whoa, now babe, tell me why,
Why does every thing, every thing.
Hey, here you gone today, I wanted to love you,
Honey, I just wanted to hold you, I said, for so long,
Yeah! Alright! Hey!

Love’s got a hold on me, baby,
Feels just like a ball and chain.
Now, love’s just draggin’ me down, baby, yeah,
Feels like a ball and chain.
I hope there’s someone out there who could tell me
Why the man I love wanna leave me in so much pain.
Yeah, maybe, maybe you could help me, come on, help me!

And I say, oh, whoa, whoa, now hon’, tell me why,
Now tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me why, yeah.
And I say, oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, when I ask you,
When I need to know why, c’mon tell me why, hey hey hey,
Here you’ve gone today,
I wanted to love you and hold you
Till the day I die.
I said whoa, whoa, whoa!!

And I say oh, whoa, whoa, no honey
It ain’t fair, daddy it ain’t fair what you do,
I see what you’re doin’ to me and you know it ain’t fair.
And I say oh, whoa whoa now baby
It ain’t fair, now, now, now, what you do
I said hon’ it ain’t fair what, hon’ it ain’t fair what you do.
Oh, here you gone today and all I ever wanted to do
Was to love you
Honey an’ I think there can be nothing wrong with that,
Only it ain’t wrong, no, no, no, no, no.

Sittin’ down by my window,
Lookin’ at the rain.
Lord, Lord, Lord, sittin’ down by my window,
Lookin’ at the rain, see the rain.
Somethin’ came along, grabbed a hold of me,
And it felt like a ball and chain.
Oh this can’t be in vain
And I’m gonna tell you one just more time, yeah, yeah!

And I say oh, whoa whoa, now baby
This can’t be, no this can’t be in vain,
And I say no no no no no no no no, whoa!
And I say whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Now now now now now now now now now no no not in vain
Hey, hope there is someone that could tell me
Hon’, tell me why,
Hon’, tell me why love is like
Just like a ball
Just like a ball
Baaaaaaalllll
Oh daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy
And a chain.
Yeah!

They make a hell of a weapon.

On the other hand, many prefer the Spiked Flail.

My cousin made one like that when we were teenagers. Its a wonder none of us were ever seriously injured playing with it.

We made and played with home-made swords, lances, spears, arrows, gunpowder for water pipe canons and rifles, and Molotov Cocktails.

If we saw it in the movies we tried it out.

Not to mention the BB gun wars.

No one ever sustained a serious injury and any areas we burned down have surely regrown by now.

Today kids aren't even allowed to walk home alone or ride a bicycle without a helmet.

Acetylene bombs were always crowd pleasers.

Gasoline makes a hell of a mushroom cloud if you let it vaporize in still air for long enough. We had the police show up one afternoon because they saw the mushroom cloud on the horizon. Grass was laid flat for 100 yards in every direction around our bonfire.

Today you would have a major response by DHS, including armored vehicles, SWAT teams, bomb disposal squads, robots, helicopters, dogs and plenty of machine guns!

Great story, good for raising real men. You should write a book, but you would have to write it with a pseudonym or be in danger of going to jail.
