--snip-- No, she said. I am talking to the police. My friends and I locked eyes in stunned silence. Between the four adults, we hold six degrees. Three of us are journalists. And not one of us had thought to call the police. We had not even considered it. We also are all black. And without realizing it, in that moment, each of us had made a set of calculations, an instantaneous weighing of the pros and cons.

Yep.
Nobody cares. Work to limit crime from YOUR “community” or shut up! Civilized people are over your excuses.
My little town and most others in the area don’t even have local police because we don’t have enough crime to justify paying to keep people on call.
The author of this article makes the case that black people think differently about police officers than white people, and that they basically grow up in "a different country" than white people because of the way they perceive the role of law enforcement.
Of course that would be the case! Indians and settlers had a different perspective about soldiers on the frontier back in the 1870s, too. The only difference today is that we're seeing the failure of a grand experiment where the government believes the "Indians" could live outside their reservations, among responsible citizens.
Giving six college degrees to four "Indians" doesn't really change anything, does it?
The government is to be feared. The popos are their army.
Middle aged white guy here...
I would not call the police either...
You have no idea if some trigger happy roided up JBT looking to hassle you just for grins shows up or a cop just doing his duty...
Most just do their duty...
Before I get flamed, a few years ago my daughter drove my car into a ditch, when I get there, I was yelling at her for being so careless, up pulls three cop cars with LEO drawing a bead on me...
When it said that three of the six are “journalists”, I concluded that their degrees don’t mean a whole lot. Therefore, I had no more interest in reading the article.
I YOU drove up on your daughter being yelled at by some man you don't know, wouldn't you pull your gun?
“We are not criminals because we are black. Nor are we somehow the only people in America who dont want to live in safe neighborhoods. Yet many of us cannot fundamentally trust the people who are charged with keeping us and our communities safe.
No you may not be a criminal yourself, but your fellow “community members” are the one’s who make your neighborhoods “unsafe” and cause the cops to be concerned when they come in to try and keep order. No fan of most cops myself, but you reap what you sow so to speak. Time for you to help to clean up the places where you live. It isn’t entirely up to the government to “keep you safe,” along with feeding, housing and clothing you from cradle to grave!
All valid points there, but this article goes a long way toward explaining why crime is rampant in so many areas in the U.S. where black people live.
Sheila Jackson Lee has a degree.
Kind of like everyone getting a trophy.
Of course not...
There are laws and regs for CC...It would be concealed just in case...
As one cop out of three at the scene ...how about asking a question or two to understand the situation before an accidental discharge puts a hole in me.....
My car was clearly in a ditch, which might be their first clue...
For the population of lefties that make up Politico’s readership the comments are, for the most part, sounding like they could have been written by Freepers.
You disappoint.
The question to ask when someone talks about having a degree is “What is you major and minor”? And “from which university”?
Yes, degrees in what? Physics? Finance? Pharmacy? My guess is those degrees are BA degrees which largely comprise of BS term papers along with sleeping in late and smoking a lot of dope.
Sorry, that I failed you....I'd try to do better next time
Next time I'd break the law...
