GERMANY: German efforts to destroy the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen begin with bombing. Even jet aircraft are rounded up for the effort.

During these attacks, the US forces over the bridge continue.

Uncle B's 2/47 Inf went across the bridge 70 years ago this morning. He considered it a pretty big deal.

B was eventually wounded by artillery somewhere on the E side of the Rhine during March, but I never have found out exactly when or where (some relatives told me that "the Germans" had hit him again, but he himself said this instance was friendly fire that fell short). In any event, he was evacuated to a hospital in France, and if family legend is correct, someone from his home town who was headed back to the states happened to see him on the way and it was he who told my grandmother that B had been wounded but was going to be okay. The government eventually got around to notifying her.
