Clinton e-mail flap reveals common practice [JEB, IRS, EPA do it too]
Boston Globe ^ | March 6, 2015 | By Jessica Meyers

WASHINGTON — Hdr22@clintonemail.com. Jeb@jeb.org.

No, these are not 2016 campaign accounts. These are the latest, highest-profile examples of private e-mail accounts used by powerful officials to conduct government business. Both political heavyweights just happen to be preparing campaigns for president.

Reports this week that Hillary Rodham Clinton relied on her personal account entirely, and did not even have a government e-mail address during her tenure as secretary of state, have triggered a firestorm over the accountability of public officials and the security of valuable information. It turns out Jeb Bush had a personal account, too, while governor of Florida.

Both used their own digital servers, revealing the high degree of personal control they held over all their official e-mails.

The disclosures highlight an ethical controversy in all levels of government and underscore just how easily politicians can set up systems that operate beyond the scrutiny of the public they were elected to serve.

Personal e-mails for public business “is not rare at all,” said Miles Rapoport, a former Connecticut secretary of state and current president of Common Cause, a Washington-based advocacy organization that promotes government accountability. “We have [Freedom of Information Act] laws and records preservations laws for reasons of transparency and accountability, and having huge numbers of e-mails on private servers doesn’t get us there.”

Top officials at the Internal Revenue Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Chemical Safety Board have recently faced similar criticism for using their personal accounts for work.

These shadow accounts help protect officials against subpoenas and embarrassing exchanges that might wind up as someone’s latest blog post.

It turns out Jeb Bush had a personal account, too, while governor of Florida.

Question -- We KNOW that Hillary broke federal laws when she did this.
Did Jeb break any Florida state laws?

Probably not.

I would never, never vote for Jeb -- but he's not a federal employee and he should not be part of the Hillary email discussion.

Another story said that Jeb Bush had his own domain name but used Florida government servers to handle it while he was in office.

Yep, I’ve noticed that there’s this new narrative of drawing equivalence between Jeb Bush e-mail and Hillary’s e-mail.

The important distinctions, such as Hillary having been a federal employee and Jeb Bush being a Florida governor, and that there are different sets of laws and regulations, are lost as the Clinton apologists try to deflect attention from this.

I’m surprised it took so long to come up with the “they did it too” defense.

Not only was Jeb Bush a state office holder, not a Fed, they don’t say that he used the private account for FL gov business.

These are people who have committed every crime you can think of, left a string of dead bodies behind them, and left office with hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank. Suddenly, a private email account is a bridge too far.

He had his government email and another email.

She used only her private line by-passing all the security checks her government email would be subject to....

Now they're finding huge gaps in what she has sent. Guess her computer crashed.....yeh, right...

It’s before the primaries, but they’re dragging Jeb down to pull Hillary up. Puzzling.

I worked for a regional branch of a major US company until I retired. It was a common and accepted practice for all of us, at every level to use non-company private email (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) for personal messages. We all understood however that we would never conduct company business using a private email service. And we knew of course that the company could see everything coming and going if they wanted to.

Using an unauthorized email account is prohibited by the companies I’ve worked for because it’s like having unprotected sex with strangers and then having sex with your wife. You expose the company network to outside hacking. You couldn’t even read your outside mail from a company computer. Opening an infected email could jeopardize the entire network. At one company somebody forwarded an email from home that shut down the entire world network for about 8 hours. It’s dangerous. There’s no telling what information Hillary supplied to our enemies. Of course, our enemies are not her enemies. We are her enemies.

A pathetic attempt by the Glob to cover up for the corrupt Clintons yet again. None of those state governors served as Sec. Of State with top secret information being communicated every day on an unsecured private server.

Where were Hillary and Obama while Ambassador Stephens and three other Americans waited for rescue in Benghazi? Since the Chinese and Russian hackers know, we’d like to know, too.

I think the race is supposed to be between Hillary and Jeb. I think people are sending a message: "If you try to take down Hillary, we'll take down your guy. And then who will be your nominee? Cruz????? You don't want that! So lay off Hillary -- and we'll all go back to a nice safe race between Hillary and Jeb."
