n an interview with Panorama magazine, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the two men whose business partnershipand one-time romantic partnershiplies behind one of the world's great fashion powerhouses, have declared that The only family is the traditional one.
The family is not a fad, Gabbana told the interviewer. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging.
Procreation must be an act of love. Children born through artificial insemination or egg donors are children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog, Dolce said.
The only family is the traditional one. No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow; there are things that should not be changed.
Domenico and Stefano were for years perhaps the globe's most prominent gay power couple. In the tightly knit, family-based, quasi-aristocratic world of Italian fashion, these two men came from nowhere to make a name for themselves that the whole world would recognize. In a 2005 New Yorker article, John Seabrook marveled at their success:
Unlike the Guccis, Pradas, Puccis, Zegnas, Ferragamos, and Fendis, Dolce and Gabbana do not come from families with long pedigrees in the production and sale of luxury goods. . . . They began as outsiders, with their noses pressed to the windows of the fashion world. Their business and their distinctive style are based not so much on family history and artisanal traditions as on their relationship with each other. And the only reason that Dolce and Gabbana are creative and business partners at all is that they were romantic partners first.
The two men have long approached political orthodoxies with the same brashness and iconoclasm that guide their fashion sensibility. In 2006, Gabbana told the Daily Mail, I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. Such statements have yet to affect Dolce & Gabbanas business, but as gay rights make gains there is likely to be less freedom to speak for those who oppose themeven if those speaking are gay men.
Already the new interview has prompted opposition, with the website LGBT News Italia calling for a boycott like the one launched against Barilla pasta after its chairman made similar comments. I tend to loathe the sub-democratic habit of expressing political preferences through consumer choices, but it would be hard to object to the victory won for elegance if conservatives were to start wearing D&G in solidarity with these two brilliant, independent-minded Italians.

Don't expect Chris Cuomo or any other homosexual "marriage" advocates to be inviting these two for an interview. Would pay to see that interview.
Dolce & Gabbana. Good on them. And there’s a slice of the population who will listen to them, who wouldn’t listen to you or me.
Wow. Those are some bold statements. They’ll probably get some blowback. One of my best (gay) friends was always against gay marriage as were many others according to him.
Those who shout the loudest dominate the media.
If you want to find D&G clothing in a store, just follow the trail of exploded liberal heads.
BRAVE AS ALL HELL...!
Wow..!
Design speaks for itself. I am more of a J. Press and L. L. bean man than a D&G man... In fact I am not fond of D&G’s lines, textures, fit, incessant harping on the name of the brand...
But in this brave statement these fashion icons say something extraordinary: That the lines are what they are, that the wearer is what he or she is, and that whereas a brand may help define the identity of a wearer in the wearer’s mind, the brand and the wearer are not codependent or homogeneous in the “brand’s mind.” They could never have gotten away with it before, but for now it is a bold and beautiful business move.
Dolce and Gabbana tell the fawning fool “fs” to “f” off, thereby de-politicizing, sharpening and purifying their market, whilst scandalizing the weenies, garnering approval from Italian traditionalists who have always yawned at New York’s 7th Avenue groupies, positioning well away from everyone else in a “dare to be different” culture, and getting a bucket-load of press.
Well done. Now for that $500 pair of loafers... Maybe I’ll find a pair at Goodwill?
Oh, those wacky Italian gays! Franco Zefferelli was the same way.
So happy to see you posting, Mrs. D.
their clothes are not my thing, but i do need a new pair of folding sunglasses, they have my business
In 2012, Rupert Everett, who is also gay, spoke out against gay parents. He got death threats, and it looks like he hasn’t worked since then.
Not bitten by lgdt stupidity.
WOW!!! JUST WOW!!! These two are HUGE players in pop culture fashion. For them to say this out loud is a major shift. I would not write this off as a minor statement. This is big. Mark my words.
Maybe you should wait a week or two. There is sure to be a revised statement coming.
Way smarter than companies like JC Penny’s.
The folding Wayfarer II: the ultimate fashion statement! You couldn’t pry mine from my cold, dead, upturned collar!
I bet lots of non-activists gays feel the same its just that the wacko radical gays make the most noise
It’s Carhartt, Moose Creek, Keene and Danner for me.
I always pictured you as a Carhart kinda guy, Golux. Maybe Freep should be runnin' pictures, like Facebook, to avoid these disappointments.
LL Bean went gay years ago when they stopped selling shotguns, Ruger pistols, those way cool woven oak lathe picnic baskets, and the moose gut snow shoes in the Pickerel shape, or round for really fat guys. Now their catalog is for girls and prep school students outside of New England. Thank The Great Manitou he took LL before he saw this shocking gentrification of a great store. "Mr. Bean invented these shoes to keep his feet dry and warm in the swamps...."
J. Press? If I am ever invited back to Cici, Muffy, and Tinker's Annual Croquet Party in Olde Greenwich, I'll be sure and order the all-white costume de rigeur from these la-di-da-outfitters.
Dolce and Gabbana? Who are these people? What? They recycle those checkered table cloths from New Haven Spaghetti Joints into clothes for the poor? What? They're queer on top of it? Who cares what they think about anything? Maybe they're trying to get Vatican business by as you suggest, sharpening and purifying their market.
Probably needs it.
The Gaystapo is coming for them!
Wow!
These guys are brave and admirable.
After Italy went after them for more taxes, I bet they have an opinion on that too....
At first, I thought this was satire. I don’t follow this sort of thing much, but I am positive that I have seen articles posted here about the pornographic advertising this fashion company utilizes. Pretty sure it’s this company.
