Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he considered activating nuclear forces to annex the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine after the fall of a pro-Moscow government in Kyiv early last year.
“We were ready to do it,” Putin said of putting nuclear forces at the ready, in a nearly three-hour documentary that aired on state television Sunday.
The president added that he had fielded many calls from foreign leaders and told them “that this is our historical territory and Russian people live there, they were in danger, and we cannot abandon them.” He said: “It was a frank and open position. And that is why I think no one was in the mood to start a world war.” …

That is also why I will not be surprised to learn early next week that he is being replaced. The 40 or so oligarchs Putey works for cannot be happy with his grand misadventure in the Ukraine or the collapse of the ruble. They never envisioned the EU being so pizzed off.

I agree. Putin greatly miscalculated how pizzed off Angela Merkel is as she is now beefing up the German military and the EU is talking about its own army.
I think Vlad has been looking for a way out of the swamp but he’s up to his azz in alligators. He’s been kicked out of the G8 and sanctions up the wazoo then the price of oil has plummeted. Just did not coincide with his put the Soviet empire back together campaign. He’s toast IMO.
Putin should have been happy with just the Crimea which everybody expected him to snatch but now he’s trying for the whole Ukraine and I don’t see it happening for him.
