Why Putin Misses the Soviet Union So Much
The Globalist ^ | February 17, 2015 | Michael Vlahos

On April 26, 2005, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, proclaimed that the fall of the Soviet Union was indeed, the catastrophe of the century. From a post-Soviet perspective, rooted in Russian identity, why would he make such a claim? To him, it is about more than power politics.

The Soviet Union was Russia’s most inspired and inspiring bid for both national and world historical identity. Like the United States, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics offered a universal vision that all humanity would supposedly one day joyously embrace.

Russians feel the West has never treated them as an equal and has always sought to contain them.

For Russians, the West’s disrespect, threats, bullying and sanctions amount to a demand that Russia conform to the West’s interests.

That is what Russians will never do. State sovereignty is new to them and they value their independence, sense of self and national pride more than Europe and the US.

The current Western approach is doomed to fail.

What Putin misses is empire and power.

Before Reagan liberated the oppressed, Russia had control of vast military assets and other countries militaries.

As opposed to, say, Iran, Saudi, Pakistan, Somalia, Democrats, ISIS, etc etc etc etc. Them's good kids, right?

That map is a little bit misleading.

This is more accurate.

So, you want to eliminate them?

It's the McCainistas like you who are the monsters and bullies trying to start a war where other people are killed.

First Napoleon and then Hitler wanted to subjugate the Russians, and now you with all your hate talk.

Post 6 isn’t a map, and it is pretty accurate.

You posted a map and it looks like nations that regained their freedom from Reagan’s, and NATO’s, and America’s efforts, what do you want, those nations to relocate, or to surrender to be reconquered by Russia now that Reagan is dead?

NATO, while formidable on paper, is now worthless. It’s 3 am. Russian paratroopers just landed at the airports of three Baltic nations. President Obama received his phone call, what would he do next?

NATO is formidable and Russia is no match for it.

If we came under attack we have “The NATO Response Force (NRF) is a highly ready and technologically advanced multinational force made up of land, air, maritime and Special Operations Forces (SOF) components that the Alliance can deploy quickly, wherever needed.”

And now the “In light of the changing security environment to the east and south of the Alliance’s borders, NATO Defence Ministers decided on 5 February 2015 to enhance the NRF by creating a “spearhead force” within it. Known as a Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), it will be able to deploy at very short notice, particularly on the periphery of NATO’s territory. The VJTF consists of a land component of around 5,000 troops with appropriate air, maritime and SOF units available.”

Altogether we have about a 30,000 man quick reaction force and the local military forces, and then masses of hell to follow them.
Russia is no match for what the United States and it’s 27 NATO allies can bring to defend our soil against his invading Army of largely poorly trained, poorly equipped, 1 year draftees, and that some experts think is as little as 250,000 men.

You have more confidence in NATO than I do.

Russia has plenty of nukes and they are prepared to use them if they are pushed enough.

Their is nothing here worth fighting WW3 over.

Evidently I do have more confidence in the United States military, and the other top militaries of the world United against Russia.

Why would Russia want to start WWIII and disappear from history?

Historically the Russians fight very hard and well when defending their country.

What motivation would our soldiers have in fighting a war against Russia on their territory?

Don’t think that we wouldn’t get hit very hard at home by them if war breaks out.

Again, its just not worth it. Let’s try and make peace, this country has much bigger things to worry about.

The Russians die by the millions when fighting superior soldiers, and no one is invading their country, but they are conducting an invasion right up to NATO’s borders, but if they try to invade NATO, their limited military will cease to exist and Putin would have to face all of the internal divisions and external challenges from the EAST, with no military, and there would be no rebuilding of Russia for generations to come.

Do you seriously believe that Putin wants to invade and start a war with NATO?

I’m very concerned that this situation will spin out of control.

In case you haven’t noticed, we don’t exactly have the A team leading this country right now.

We’re also broke and can’t afford WW3.

I’m very concerned for my country and family. This just isn’t worth it.
