Scott Walker Hones His Image Among Republicans for Possible Presidential Race
New York TImes ^ | March 20, 2015 | PATRICK HEALY

Posted on 03/20/2015 3:50:32 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Out on the presidential campaign trail, Gov. Scott Walker has left “Wiscahnsin” back home in Wisconsin. He now wants to strengthen the economy, not the “ecahnahmy.” And while he once had the “ahnor” of meeting fellow Republicans, he told one group here this week that he simply enjoyed “talkin’ with y’all.”

The classic Upper Midwest accent – nasal and full of flat a’s – is one of several Walker trademarks to have fallen away this month after an intense period of strategizing and coaching designed to help Mr. Walker capitalize on his popularity in early polls and show that he is not some provincial politician out of his depth.

He is tailoring his pitch to his audiences — wearing pullover sweaters in earth-tone colors in one early primary state, New Hampshire, and discussing the power of prayer in another, here in South Carolina. He has reined in his rambling speeches, at least compared with his recorded remarks over the years. He is trying to listen more and opine less, political associates say, and he is easygoing with voters — a contrast with his pugilistic reputation from his successful battle against Wisconsin labor unions, which made him a hero to many conservatives.

[snip]

And at the dinner, as well as in his Concord speech, his Wisconsin honk was noticeably absent.

“I didn’t hear it,” Ms. Horn said. “Good for him, good for him.”

If choose not to understand his problems

But he did understand it, which is why he corrected his stand. He listened to the base.

Or do you prefer he do group hugs to illegals like Jeb and Rubio wants?

“But he did understand it, which is why he corrected his stand. He listened to the base.”

I too THOUGHT he corrected it prior to hiring her - now my doubts are back.

Sorry, he’s still damn good, but I prefer we nominate someone we don’t have to worry about - the fights we had with Bush Junior SUCKED and it was because he needed to be dragged by us to right position on Amnesty.

The issue is a NO-BRAINER for the base, and is the MOST IMPORTANT issue in this country, since nothing else matters if Amnesty gets through - since the Dems will OWN Washington and everything else - his great work on the unions, his probably good positions on everything else simply won’t make a difference once this country is repopulated - and forget about keeping your guns.

I DO NOT want a person that needs to “evolve” his stance on Amnesty. It is a NO-BRAINER to the base, and I suspect that’s the case for you and the others here.

“FGS, Walker is NOT in favor of amnesty. This really isn’t much of a topic in Wisconsin, compared to the border states, although we have more than our fair share of illegals.”

I agree he seemed to have flipped to the right side of the issue as he moved up in office, but I trust ANYONE that needs to go through A LEARNING CURVE on the issue. It is a NO-BRAINER.

Is she still on his payroll? Didn't think so.

Oh well, that's makes it all just peachy. BTW Bob, nice diversion on the question directed at you. But I fully understand what Mr. Walker's problems are.

Here are a few comment from the recent past from Walker regarding this country killing violent illegal invasion, amnesty etc.

_______________________________________________________

In 2013 Walker acknowledged the dependency of Wisconsin farms on migrant workers, many of them illegal.

Walker argued against currently onerous challenges for workers to come to the United States legally.

Walker: "If people want to come here and work hard and benefit, I don't care whether they come from Mexico or Ireland or Germany or Canada or South Africa or anywhere else," Walker told the editorial board. "I want them here."

Walker, According to the Daily Herald, during his 2010 gubernatorial bid he said he would support legislation allowing police to stop those they suspected were illegal immigrants. Two years later, he no longer supported such a bill.

At a February 2013 national conference hosted by Politico, Walker said fixing the legal immigration system should come first, but said the next step is we "gotta embrace" a "legal pathway" for those here unlawfully. He did not elaborate on what he meant.

In a July 2013 interview with Wausau (Wis.) Daily Herald staffers, Walker said "it makes sense" that people could not only stay here but get citizenship with the right mix of penalties and waiting periods and other requirements. -- In 2013 and later, Walker didn’t endorse any specific bill in Congress that would have allowed illegal immigrants to stay here. But at the Politico conference, he didn’t dismiss legislative action if some "nuances" were addressed.

At that conference he flatly opposed deporting people who are here unlawfully, saying "you’ve got to find a way to make it legally possible for people moving forward."

_____________________________________________________

I believe it's impossible to have such a sudden sea change in his position after 4 decades of open borders chaotic violent lawlessness. All sponsored by government BTW.

No sale.

What could possibly be the motive for this massive change of position Bob?

Could it be to save his own political butt? We've seen all this before....Over and over.

“Every stumble Walker’s had this winter are times when he was pushed to talk about issues he didn’t want to talk about or face things he didn’t want to face,”

I call bull...

Every time Walker didn’t walk into the media’s quicksand questions, they characterized it as a stumble.

Who?

All of the GOP candidates are on record as to having supported amnesty.

Who do you trust going forward?

Are you suggesting those comments were so bad that they were not Mr. Walker’s comments? Are you suggesting the lied and simply made up comments which Walker never made?

I am open to hearing the Amnesty dirt on Cotton and Cruz, and I am open to Walker. If you guys can show me he’s no worse than they are, I may go back to him. Two weeks ago I was willing to forgive him.

I’ll study other aspects of Scott Walker, but I am absolutely 100% positive that I like the way he took down the organized criminals known as big labor. Unions almost killed the state, and he methodically loosened their noose.

For others, read this article before deciding on Walker...

My gosh, reading the NYT article attached to this thread is enough! I half-read, half-skimmed the whole thing, and came away with no idea about where Scott Walker stands on, say, Obamacare, or the IRS, since Ted brought it up. I don't know where he stands on environmentalism, education, and not on immigration either, not from this article.

As it happens, I know where Cruz stands on those things, or most of them. I like to think Cruz would deal with the immigration problem from the inside out. Get rid of the minimum wage and de-regulate so that businesses can employ teens, simply and honestly. People can handle themselves. Get rid of that, and also get rid of the government-subsidized education, housing, and food illegals get now ... and watch the immigration problem melt away.

Ah ferreget all that Finny, he was a good governor...yuk yuk..

Humor aside, good points.

Has he stood up to the podium and listed all the fed gov agencies he wants to dramatically reduce in size and scope and or completely eliminate?

If not, why not?

When Walker decided to cut in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants he had just become governor of a state that was in very bad condition financially. Cuts had to be made.

At that time I believe that it was a no-brainer for Walker to cut the in-state tuition for these immigrants. It certainly would be one of the few cuts that would receive very little opposition from most Wisconsin taxpayers. That said it also was the right thing to do. Many parents in WI have children attending college out of state and they are CITIZENS that have to pay full tuition. And yes, this was an issue being talked about at the time. Many Wisconsonites were very angry about it as I am sure Walker was aware.

Why are undocumented aliens attending our university in the first place? Obviously they shouldn’t be hard to check up on if they are applying to be students. Giving them a break in tuition shouldn’t even be a topic of discussion. How to send them back to where they came from is the issue.

Walker has to walk a fine line between alienating the conservative base and losing financial support from big donors that he’ll need to win an election. And those big donors want cheap immigrant labor.

Amazing - I never heard the NYT folks mocking Hillary when she went "negro" by claiming that: "Aah ain't no ways taahred".....

Walker takes speaking lessons to soften an accent that isn't "normal for 93% of the nation and he becomes a target for it.

Scott must scare the left even more than he does some FReepers.....
