KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT – During a visit to Iraq on Monday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and senior lawmakers met with the country’s leaders and our ambassador and commanders on the ground to assess efforts to defeat ISIL and combat Iran’s rising influence.

In Baghdad, the delegation met with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq Salim al-Jabouri. Lawmakers also met with U.S. Ambassador Stuart Jones and Lt. General James L. Terry, commander, Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve.

Similar to the delegation’s visit to Jordan, discussions in Baghdad focused on Iran’s rising influence and the spreading of the terrorist threat.

Speaker Boehner, who last visited Iraq in 2011, issued the following statement on the delegation’s visit to Iraq:

“A stable, democratic, and independent Iraq remains vital to America’s national security interests. The United States must carefully manage the mission to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL to ensure it does not come at the expense of ceding Iraq’s strategic independence to Iran, which does not seek to keep the country whole. To that end, we appreciated the opportunity to have candid exchanges with Prime Minister al-Abadi and Speaker al-Jabouri. We hope to see passage of legislation soon, especially in the areas of reconciliation, as a tangible step forward for the political solution needed in Iraq. We also expressed strong support for increasing logistical and materiel support to the tribes in al Anbar province and hope to see additional deliveries as an immediate confidence-building move. Iraq is a young democracy, but the United States was a young democracy once too, and we know that it takes vigilance and leadership to make it work and endure.”

The delegation joining Speaker Boehner in the Middle East is made up of senior lawmakers charged with oversight of the United States’ efforts to defeat the terrorist threat and support our partners in the region:

Rep. John Kline (R-MN) is chairman of the House Education & the Workforce Committee and a member of the House Armed Services Committee. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) is chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East & North Africa and a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) is chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) is chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, & Human Services, and a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) is chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) is chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy & Water. Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) is a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction & Veterans Affairs.

Looks like the Boehner delegation may be waiting for the Iran talks to officially "end" before going to Israel.
