WaPo: A piece of metal that broke loose and fell off a power line 43 miles from D.C. temporarily knocked out electricity to the White House, State Department and wide swaths of the nation’s capital and its Maryland suburbs early Tuesday afternoon.

The simple failure of a piece of electrical transmission equipment briefly caused widespread confusion and alarm. Several people were trapped in stranded elevators, passengers were left searching for exits in darkened underground Metro stations, and a building full of Department of Energy employees and the main campus of the University of Maryland closed early as it remained unclear when power would be restored to some parts of the region.

My grandfather was the section foreman half way between El Paso and Columbus, NM. The place is gone and so are the tracks. Their house had a console radio that used dry cell batteries for power. I remember listening to it when I was little and I’ll be 70 this month.

I was just trying to figure out what I could cook tonight that wouldn’t involve more than a sterno ;-)

The power went out where I work, but 2 miles away where I live, nothing went wrong.

I don't remember a radio but I am sure they had one. I do remember kerosene lanterns, no running water in the house and going to the little house behind the house to use the bathroom. I will be 75 in a few months and what I remember from the house I grew up in was an attic fan and no A/C. I could get along without lots of our modern conveniences but I would hate to live in Houston with no A/C.
