De Blasio Lauds Comcast’s Withdrawal Of Time Warner Takeover Bid

Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was glad the merger didn’t go through.

“Comcast’s withdrawal of its bid to merge with Time Warner Cable is good for the American consumer and it shows that our regulatory and legal system work,” de Blasio said in a statement. “We need more competition to bring down prices and ensure a democratic internet for all. The merger would have further concentrated market power in the cable and broadband sectors and created even greater barriers to the City’s goals of universal, affordable high-speed Internet access.” One of the concerns consumer advocates and competitors had with the Comcast deal was that it could undermine the streaming video industry that is reshaping TV.

Comcast could, for example, require onerous payments from new online-only video providers for connecting to its network. Dish, the satellite TV company behind the new Web video service Sling TV, and Netflix opposed the deal.

As long as consumers will pay for any more than the minimal cable package, and only if that's necessary for reception, the cable companies will abuse the consumer. If this merger had happened, the giant would be totally able to make huge profits while a lot of people cut the cable.

Wouldn't it be nice if the DC crowd said bundling is illegal?

Allies are friends of convenience. They will disagree from time to time.
