Citing a need to protect citizens' religious liberty, Ted Cruz on Friday called on Congress to formerly disapprove of a bill passed by the District of Columbia council preventing employers from retaliating against workers who have abortions or premarital sex.
"The D.C. Council has proposed two measures that trample the very rights the First Amendment was designed to protect the right of citizens to freely practice their faith.
"The Constitution gives Congress the authority to exercise jurisdiction over the District of Columbia in all cases whatsoever.' And both the House and Senate have a constitutional duty to protect citizens' religious liberty, as enshrined in the First Amendment," Cruz said in a statement issued hours after the House voted of Representatives voted to reverse the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act (RHNDA). I applaud the House for passing a resolution of disapproval of RHNDA. I urge the Senate to immediately do the same," he said on Friday.
The disapproval measure was sponsored by Tennessee Republican Diane Black and passed the House by a vote of 228-192 on Thursday evening.
Cruz co-sponsored a companion resolution in the Senate targeting the RHNDA and the Human Rights Amendment Act, which opponents contend protects gay student groups and would prevent religious educational institutions from barring funds from going to groups that they believe violate their religious beliefs.
It represents the first time since 1991 that Congress has overturned a bill passed by the D.C. council, reports The Hill.
However, the ban will remain law because Congress failed to act before the 30-day review process during which a law passed by the D.C. council can be blocked expires Saturday, according to Roll Call. (snip)

Cruzing with Ted.
“However, the ban will remain law because Congress failed to act before the 30-day review process during which a law passed by the D.C. council can be blocked expires Saturday”
Our Congress never fails to screw the pooch.
Congress is useless. It’s no wonder head lice are held in higher favor than Congress.
If only we had more like him in Congress instead of the pansy lets reach out crowd we have now.
If he acted on time, he should get a good pat on the back but too late is too late.
In Cochran’s case, perhaps literally.
Lets vote for him.
We are always two steps behind and react to the left while they have their decades agenda in progress.
We have to be more proactive instead of reactive to the left.
Asking these “SPINELESS WHORES” to take a stand on anything as controversial as “RELIGIOUS FREEDOM” is like asking a leopard to change his spots. Understand this Mr Cruz, these are “SPINELESS WHORES”. What they’ll probably do is wet their finger, find out which way the wind is blowing the vote accordingly.
DC Home Rule, or from wherever else the 30 day review process derived, is congressional law delegating their constitutional authority, not part of the constitution. Congress still has the authority and power to actively override it, up to and including revoking Home Rule itself. However I doubt they want that responsibility, preferring to preserve the legal illusion that they’re not responsible. Would you want to be seen as responsible should should some community organizer decide to follow Baltimore’s example?
