The emergency room staff ordered the pizza in the first place. That is sort of odd, but since they were treating him for his injuries, it is natural that he should call for the replacement pie on their behalf.

Why is it odd that the Emergency Room staff ordered pizza? The hospital staff were some of our best customers back in the day when I delivered pizza as a student.

Hey, if I were being treated in the ER that ordered the pizza, I’d want to see to it getting delivered, too!

I resisted using the word "ironic" - sort of circular that he ends up there. The story is written badly and fails to bring out that detail.
