In both cases it seems to track living patterns for ethnic/religious communities. I.e. the sea in which guerilla movements swim.
If these communities are where this map implies they are, they are mixed up and overlap. Which means lots of people are close neighbors who are likely to kill each other. Syria and Iraq and Rwanda.

I don’t know if there is any comparison to watching the Asian countries war in the 30’s. We ended up getting pulled into that with Pearl.
the difference I guess, is that the Japanese war machine dwarfed any of theses messy countries
