Sweden's Volvo has chosen a site in South Carolina for a $500 million investment in its first U.S. plant, it said on Monday, targeting a bigger share of the increasingly competitive North American premium market. Work will begin this year on the factory in Berkeley County, with production due to start in 2018 and quickly reach 100,000 vehicles a year.

Another foreign nameplate rejects Michigan./src on/I wonder why?/src off/SC seems to be a new Michigan with at least BMW and Honda having facilities there. One drives past the Honda factory on I-95.

I find it funny the rate at which we are building cars. every lot I pass is full and the dealerships have overflow lots usually within a couple miles that are full as well. Who is buying all these cars and where are the old ones going?
It is the same ponzi scheme with businesses building a new, larger building every few years and leaving the old one standing vacant for decades until it is torn down. The economic benefit is all a house of mirrors and someday the mirror will break. Unbridled growth (the appearance of it) is not healthy.

Reason: there are already a large number of automobile parts suppliers in South Carolina supplying parts for BMW's built at the Spartanburg, SC plant. As such, Volvo can tap into that same supplier chain to build Volvos in there.
It'll be very interesting to see what Volvo builds there. I'm hoping that the next-generation models based on the platform used by the S40/V40 will be built there.

That looks like my dad’s Volvo from the 80s. I drove that think and it felt like I was driving a tank.

Consider that the anemic $6 billion in GDP growth last month included something like $124 billion of inventories growth ... and what happens if (when) that excess inventories can’t be sold.

Looks like it will be just off I-26, north of Charleston.

I hade a 67 volvo station wagon with the engine from one of those, four cylinders with twin stromberg carburetors and a 4 speed stick
It was a wonderful car for our curvy mountain roads. Third gear was a positive dream
