Verizon Communications Inc. is buying AOL Inc. in a $4.4 billion deal aimed at advancing the telecom giant's growth ambitions in mobile video and advertising.
The all-cash deal values AOL at $50 a share, a 23% premium over the company's three-month volume-weighted average price. AOL shares rose 18% in premarket trading to $50.27. Verizon shares fell 1.6% to $49.
The acquisition would give Verizon, which has set its sights on entering the crowded online video marketplace, access to advanced technology AOL has developed for selling ads and delivering high-quality Web video.

For those who have or used to have AOL.com accounts.
We remember calling AOL AO***L
I had an AOL account way back in the beginning, after I had Prodigy. I had Verizon DSL about 12 years ago until I could no longer tolerate their worthless CS and tech support.
AOL still exists? And, how are they worth $4 billion?
The Huffington Post and a few other pieces here and there. However, much we don’t like HuffPost on the right, they are actually quite successful in raw numbers.
No comma intended after However.
Yep, had'm both. I remember whem Prodigy started floating the idea of charging per email sent received.

They’ll get other assets, too.
I remember calling AOL “Internet For Dummies.” Good times.
Don’t forget that AOL acquired Netscape and Netscape Navigator.
“Good times.”
Remember the days when you walked into Office Depot, OfficeMax, and Staples and they would try and sign you up to receive a free computer along with your signing a contract for dial-up Internet service? When I want to give the sales associates a hard time today I go in and ask them for the free computer in the weekly ad. It never fails, they’re always too young to remember you could get a free computer in their stores.
I started with Delphi, text only. Got a AOL floppy and tried it for maybe 5 minutes. Too full of crap. Eventually went with a Boston based provider, TIAC, with Netscape and Eudora. That was good stuff.
I fully shingled my roof using the FREE AOL! CDs they mailed and blanketed the country with back in the 90s.

Can you use more?
Training wheels for the information super highway.
Too funny! I had forgotten all about that.
Sitting around the Verizon board room thinking “so, what internet company can we acquire without p*ssing off the Millenials? A-HA!!!!”
I wonder if they are going to throw in Enron and Bear Sterns into the deal?
