GOP expected to buck conservatives on Iran (Bill could pass Thursday)

House Republican leaders are unlikely to allow amendments to the Senate-passed Iran bill, bucking a clutch of conservatives who wanted to change the language, according to multiple sources familiar with internal planning.

The move all but assures passage of the legislation when it comes up for a House vote, probably on Thursday. It was approved by the Senate last week, 98-1. GOP leadership expects to discuss its plans at a closed-door party meeting Wednesday.

Members of the House Freedom Caucus, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), are pushing for Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) to allow amendments. A group of conservatives believe the legislation is too weak.

But leadership aides say the decision not to entertain amendments is all but final.

Allowing amendments would be a politically perilous move. Many of the changes under discussion would be difficult for members of both parties to vote against. But any amendment to the bill would sink the legislation, which was crafted with input from Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and the White House.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), a Senate candidate, released a list of amendments he is prepared to offer. One would require that Iran to “pay reparations for all U.S. servicemen killed or harmed in Iraq due directly or indirectly to the involvement of any Iranian funded or supported groups.” Another would bar the lifting of sanctions on Iran until it’s certified that it has shuttered its nuclear program. Another DeSantis proposal would require Iran to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency into “all Iranian military sites at any time.” The Republican also wants the Obama administration to make the “negotiating record” available for review by members of Congress.

In addition, the several dozen members of the House Freedom Caucus are pressing to include language that would force Iran to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, a measure first proposed by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

“This legislation, unfortunately, is inadequate to the task and stated mission: it virtually assures that Congress will be unable to prevent a very bad deal from being agreed to and implemented between Iran and the P5+1,” Freedom Caucus members write in a letter they’re currently circulating.

Thus putting to rest the argument of some that somehow, by voting FOR The bill in the senate, our conservative leaders in the senate made it easier for the house to amend the bill.

Well, it’s just the lesser evil people DEMANDED here in action.

I’m sure Iran appreciate their empowerment.

More like “Liberal GOP-e expected to buck Americans (and Israelis) on Iran”. Giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

I think any move is considered "politically perilous" by this bunch of losers. There is truly not a dime's worth of difference between the two parties at this point.

It worked just like it was intended actually. People were given a choice. Vote for the people that TOLD THEM they intended to WORK WITH OBAMA if given the House and Senate...Or NOT vote for the people that TOLD THEM they were going to WORK WITH OBAMA if they were given the House and Senate.

People then freely made a choice. They were told by the people they voted for and by several of us here and elsewhere what would happen. It was no secret. They chose this freely and of their own accord.

They Aided the enemy measurably. Period. There is no excuse because the people they voted for TOLD THEM what they would do. Now they sit and claim that they are upset. They blame the GOPe and to be sure the GOP did what it did/does. As do the Democrats. But none of them would even be there had people not yet AGAIN abandoned principle. They wanted to win. They won.

Now they can bear the responsibility of their actions when Iran nukes Israel, Europe, Us...Because without their help, none of this would have been possible. Democrats did not send GOPe to DC. Conservatives did not send GOPe to DC. Lesser evil/No matter what voters did. Thats the simple reality.

Actions have consequences. Votes matter. And now we pay the price for cowardice and ‘winning” with liberals running the supposed right wing of our government.

I have more respect for the dirt and slime on the bottom of my shoes than I have for guys like Ron DeSantis. For the only vote that really mattered for this Congress, he voted to reelect Boehner for Speaker, ensuring that, for the next two years, all the rest of his votes would be meaningless Kabuki. All these symbolic votes now, mean nothing. DeSantis just happens to be my Congressman, so I feel particularly betrayed by this despicable phony, but unfortunately he is not alone.

Disgusting day for America and our allies the day this passes. Tar, feathers, pitchforks, and spit should be in short supply.

The Democrats in R jerseys are working harder for Obama than the real Democrats.

I for one, enjoyed this latest presentation of GOP Kabuki theater. Strong performances and great stagecraft. Bravo!

Can't wait for the next show.

I happen to think you are dead wrong on DeSantis, despite his voting for BoneHead, which I think was a strategic move rather than an ulterior one you seem to be convinced of. You should know he has been authoring many conservative amendments and legislation proposals. I get his e-mail updates, do you?

I am six miles away from the 6th but am saddled with a real GOPe do-nothing slug of the 4th’s Crenshaw who we only hear from every two years to tell us from DC fundraisers just how conservative he is. It is just the same old and worn out Mayport campaigns every two years.

DeSantis does not vote the leadership line, Crenshaw does, every time he can. Crenshaw is a back bencher sub-committee hack who has no intention or drive to aspire to a leadership position despite having been there since Tillie Fowler lived up to her term limit convictions. So Crenshaw has been there for 13 years. Would you rather have him to represent you?

Is this really news?

It would only be news in my book if the GOP wasn’t trying to screw conservatives.

I said nothing about motive. I simply stated facts (aside from my opinion that he is lower than shoe slime). On the only vote that mattered, he voted to empower the GOP-elite. All his amendments, etc. now are meaningless, because the effect nothing. This Congress will never be allowed to vote on anything meaningful, because people like DeSantis voted to maintain the status quo in their party’s leadership. I am aware that he has a fairly strong rating as far as voting on conservative issues. Unfortunately, that’s not good enough. Symbolic votes mean nothing. When it mattered, he voted the wrong way.

I know what your point was completely. It was just wrong in this situation. The box theory is about when Govt ignores you.

Now the Govt. absolutely ignores almost half of America I agree. The problem is they DID NOT ignore their voters. The problem is that ‘their’ voters are every bit as evil as they are. Dems want amnesty and bad trade deals and cooperation and appeasement of Iran. So do GOPe voters. Thats why they voted for them.

Because lets face it. Only an abject moron would vote in a person he strongly disagreed with AFTER that person TOLD THEM they would cooperate with Barry if given power (House/Senate). I mean come on. That would be retardation level. A guy/group tells you he/they is/are gonna assist the most vile man America ever produced and you go and give him the power to do it?

I realize some people really are that stupid but it’s more likely they agree with them, wouldn’t you think? Regardless, they did indeed vote for them and so the system worked exactly as it was supposed to. We don’t like the results of the vote but that’s because of disgusting people that put ‘winning’ and ‘lesser evil’ over their country, their families and their principles, not because they system failed. DC doesn’t listen to us. I totally agree. But they do listen to the people that made the deal.
