Abstinence-only curriculum is not sex education, judge rules

California’s sex-education law prohibits school districts from indoctrinating students on the need to remain celibate before marriage or teaching them that abstinence is the only safe way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, a judge has ruled.

The decision by Fresno County Superior Court Judge Donald Black applies only to the Clovis School District. But as the first ruling to interpret California’s 11-year-old law on sex education and disease prevention, it should put schools on notice that “young people need complete, accurate health information required by law,” said Phyllida Burlingame, director of Reproductive Justice Policy for the ACLU, which took part in the suit.

“This is the first time that abstinence-only-until-marriage curricula have been found to be medically inaccurate,” Burlingame said Monday.

OK,... how about teaching that the the only 100% safe pill, is an SDPIRIN held firmly between your knees.

What do you call kids who get abstinence only sex ed? PARENTS!

Seriously, I still remember being a hormone fueled teenager. Teens are not little children, they are grownups in training who need proper education.

Listen to me very closely, Judge Black and Harridan Phyllida - you get ONE chance to hear and understand:
Celibacy, abstinence and marriage are the ONLY kind of sex education you have the right to teach my (hypothetical) children. Should I hear otherwise, you will be answering directly to me (and Mr. Ruger...address 45 mag Super Blackhawk Way)

Such a strawman ruled against - “abstinence is the only safe way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases”.

It’s not the ONLY safe way, but if followed it does have a 100% success rate. Just saying.

pregnant by NOT having sex...

Well, that would be Mary, the mother of Jesus.

And that now includes bo, who supercedes Jesus, now that he has corrected us on the cynicism concerning the eternal existance of the poor.

Well, that is a load of crap. That is the education I got 40 years ago - and I am still not a parent.

I was not taught to be a “grownup in training” by pointing at the examples of grownups still behaving as children for my models. My dad was my model, he was married to one woman his entire life - and only fathered children with her. All of my grandparents, uncles, and my aunts were similar models for me.

That proper education should be provided by the parents, or their APPOINTED surrogate teacher, not assumed by some know-it-all tramp who has no idea what discipline or what controlling one’s desires is about.

Anyone who does not teach about sex properly is doing great damage to families, to communities and to society. If the first thing they teach is not, “Sex is extremely powerful, extremely dangerous, and extremely harmful outside of a true, devoted marriage.” Then they know NOTHING about sex, and have no business teaching anyone else about it.

It was hypothesized that comprehensive, “scientific” sex education for school students would result in fewer teen pregnancies, less disease, and generally happier lives.

The experiment - graphic sex instruction, guilt-free fornication, distribution of contraceptives, easy abortion - was conducted.

The results were more pregnancies, abortions, disease, relationship violence, and children with never-married parents.

If you don’t accept that this hypothesis has been demonstrated to be false, then you don’t believe in science.

Also - sex education cannot possibly be adequately done in a government school. Teaching sex without God is like trying to teach engineering without math.

First of all, and for the umteenth time, get your kids out of public school. God didn’t give them to you to hand over to the state fora third of their lives until their majority.

Second, teach the biology of mammal reproduction. All of it.

And teach that abstaining is the only way to guarantee that you will not suffer one of the consequences of sex: pregnancy or disease.

Don’t leave out biology. There is nothing to be said for ignorance. Don’t leave out disease or pregnancy. There is nothing to be said for unintended consequences, either.

It really is that simple.

The illegitimacy rate in 1960 was only 5.3%. Today it is 40.8%. Yes, I can see that the sex education we have today is so much more helpful than the reliance on morality that we had in the past.

Telling your kid “Just don’t do it!” sounds like a wonderful idea - until your kid gets knocked up or infected. This isn’t the world you grew up in and teens are always doing things their parents don’t know about.

You’re still shoveling a load of crap and trying to call it ice-cream.

Where did I ever imply that proper teaching is telling your kid “Just don’t do it”? Does one teach a kid not to smoke by puffing away while saying “Just don’t do it?” Doesn’t your specious argument apply to smoking just as much as it does to sex? And smoking is declining in younger generations....why the heck is that? Isn’t abstinence EXACTLY what they’re teaching regarding cigarettes? Don’t teens “just want to smoke” like they “just want to have sex”? Your argument is foolish and fallacious on it’s face.

I will say this - I don’t know of a single one of my cousins or siblings that smokes - and not one of their parents smoked....FREAKING AMAZING COINCIDENCE.

Your ignorance regarding raising children should not be license for another person, completely ignorant about sex, to teach my children about it.

And yeah - I did a lot of things that my folks didn’t know about, but one of them was not sticking my whing-ding into some girl’s whoha, or taking drugs, or smoking, or underage drinking (nor did any of my sibs). And my parents taught us that.

Ignorance regarding raising children? I have an amazing 16 year old honor student son. I know exactly what he is going through. I want him to be fully informed about the realities of sex. It is people like you who are the reason teens sneer at conservatives. It is hard to convey the virtues of limited government and personal freedom and responsibility while Bible thumpers preach that ignorance about basic bodily functions is a good thing.

If your teen sneers at conservatism - you shouldn’t brag about how you raised him.

How ‘bout you let me teach your kids about sex? Don’t like that idea? THEN WHY THE FRICK DO YOU THINK IT’S OK TO TEACH “MY” KIDS????

You don’t have the foggiest clue about the concept of limited government, do you? What part of “keep your government sex ed teachers away from my kids” do you not understand? And what part of “the government has to teach every kid about sex” do you claim to be limited government? (I understand perfectly why you struggle with teaching the virtues of limited government).

You are the one showing your ignorance. First, nobody is preaching ignorance about anything; they are actually talking about the most successful method of teaching personal freedom and responsibility regarding sex. You are too ignorant to understand that. You are also demanding that we teach our children the way you teach yours.

If I had a kid in public school - something I would never do - I would insist that my kids only be taught abstinence...I’ll teach them the rest. Kids don’t need to be taught about the pleasures of mutual masturbation to be responsible about sex.

Teach your kids whatever and however you want....but don’t you dare to teach my kids about things of which you are ignorant; things that are my responsibility in the first place.

Just answer me this: why does teaching abstinence work for cigarettes, but not for sex? I warn you, I will contnue to ask that question until you answer it, or quit trying to sell you manure pile.

BTW - from your comments,I’m guessing you encouraged your son to become an engineer without bothering to learn math?

You misuse a term: Sex is not a basic body function, but a secondary one (part of the reason you don’t understand sex, because you don’t understand its place).

Basic body functions, by definition, are those required to sustain one’s own life: drink, eat, digest, urinate, defecate, breath...kids are born knowing how to do those things.

This is so easy to fix, I assume the good Judge lives in Fresno County, that is where this happened, a Fresno County Court. The County Supervisors just need to take a VOTE authorizing the SIEZURE of the Good Judges HOME through EMINENT DOMAIN. The Proceeds from the sale will be used for “Economic Activity” as cited in the KELO DECISION by the US Supreme Court. Use the funds to pay the Attorney Fees.

ALL LEGAL AND APPROVED BY OUR GOVERNMENT!
