I thought the Captain’s claim not to have sunk any allied ships might have been a tall tale, but I looked it up and it’s correct. The boat was used as a training boat until mid-April, when it was dispatched on its first and only war patrol.
Note that he is holding a souvenir Arisaka... taken from a soldier who no longer had any use for it.
