Tim Cook on meeting George Wallace as teen: 'It felt wrong, like I was selling a piece of my soul'

Apple CEO and Alabama native Tim Cook had some choice words on Sunday about meeting former Alabama Gov. George Wallace when he was a teenager.

Cook, the first openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company, spoke of Wallace during a commencement address he gave at George Washington University. According to Business Insider, the Robertsdale native told the graduating class an anecdote about visiting Washington, D.C., as a 16-year-old who had won an essay contest at school.

Before leaving for D.C., Cook had the chance to go to Montgomery and meet Wallace, who was notorious for his opposition to racial integration.

"Meeting my governor was not an honor for me," Cook said. "Shaking his hand felt like a betrayal of my own beliefs. It felt wrong, like I was selling a piece of my soul."

Cook contrasted Wallace with President Jimmy Carter, who he met on his D.C. trip. Both were Southern natives, but had very different values.

"Carter was kind and compassionate. He held the most powerful job in the world, and had not sacrificed any of his humanity," Cook said. "It was clear to me that one was right and one was wrong."

I believe Tim Cook is becoming better known for being a gay activist than he is the CEO of Apple.

Steve Jobs made Apple with great innovations. Tim is an activist living off Jobs' innovations. Sooner or later, the Jobs' innovations will fade and Apple will begin to rot with this worm.

If Tim is overly concerned for his soul, he might should consider turning from sin. The same applies to all of us.

Tim Cook has donated millions to the Human Rights Campaign. HRC is the largest gay activist organization in the nation. There are people starving around the world and Tim's greatest cause is the gay lifestyle? I consider that shameful.

George Wallace was wrong on many things but he was very remorseful. In fact, he won the black vote the last time he ran for governor of Alabama. Blacks were willing to forgive but I guess Timmy is not. No one forced Tim to meet Wallace and shake his hand.

Next to Obama, Jimmy Carter is the worst president in our nation's history. The fact that Cook would offer him praise shows just how clueless he is.

I’ve done business with Apple. It felt wrong, like I was selling a piece of my soul.

I just read some of the replies to the AL.com story and found this one:

“After he told the lie about seeing a burning cross in Robertsdale, during the 1970’s, I doubt any of his stories really happened.”

I googled it and found that Tim Cook has been telling this story for years. I live in the area and I can tell you that I would remember the story too. It would have been big news. I believe his story is something he dreamed up. The man has no shame.

You do realize that admitting you had to sell a piece of your soul to do business with Apple® is a violation of your Non-Disclosure Agreement.

You'll be hearing from their Satanic Majesties lawyers very soon.

I call BS. He didn’t feel that way at the time, he felt that way years later when he thought about what he felt at that time.

I don’t believe it either. He made up a false story about the KKK burning a cross in his Alabama hometown so I am not sure what to believe that he says.

And, yes, I believe the cross burning story is FALSE. I doubt he can find anyone else that can honestly validate it — unless he’s paying them.

By 1977, when Tim Cook met him, George Wallace had long since ceased preaching racial segregation. He endorsed Jimmy Carter for president in 1976 and was starting to court the black vote—which he would win—in subsequent gubernatorial campaigns.

Timmy boy, you are a liar. Your sodomy consumes everything about you. Get your morality right then maybe we can take you seriously. "When there are no absolutes to govern society, society becomes the absolute.” Franciss Schaeffer

I'm a George Wallace sympathizer, if not a fan. He flew on bombing missions in the Pacific Theater in WWII, and at the end he became convinced that if he went out again it would be his end, and he dug in his heels, as it were. Remarkably, he was given his desired reprieve, as he had indeed served his term. Forget where I read this. I assume you could look it up.

Re 1963, Wallace should be considered a Liberal hero, because he ultimately stood down from his Stand in the Schoolhouse Door. I always assumed that this was an arranged formality, but the Wiki link suggests that the drama was real.
