ISIS seizes control of key Iraqi city Ramadi as government forces pull back

he key Iraqi city of Ramadi fell to ISIS on Sunday after government security forces pulled out of a military base on the west side of the city, the mayor and a high-ranking security official said.

The ISIS advances came after militants detonated a series of morning car bomb blasts, Mayor Dalaf al-Kubaisy and a high-ranking Iraqi security official said. The explosions forced Iraqi security forces and tribal fighters to retreat to the city's east, they said.

But Iraqi and U.S. officials said Sunday that the fight for Ramadi is far from over.

Clashes have raged in the beleaguered capital of Anbar province, Iraq's Sunni heartland, for months as Iraqi and allied forces battle ISIS militants for control of the strategically located city, which is just 110 km (70 miles) west of Baghdad.

Ramadi, the largest city in western Iraq, is situated just a few miles from an Iraqi army headquarters that ISIS blew up in March.

It sounds like sooner or later ISIS will take over all of Iraq. Obama sure is seeing to that through his inaction.

“But Iraqi and U.S. officials said Sunday that the fight for Ramadi is far from over.”

So said Indianapolis at the two minute warning at Foxboro. I suppose they will still hold on to fighting for the eastern part of the city once they are surrounded. Then they can pull a Kerry and surrender with honor while their heads are used for soccer balls.

If you watch the video closely at the link. Towards the end of it you see ISIS running around with U.S. weapons such as an M4 and Kevlar helmet. The guy with the web gear is most likely their Fire team leader too. Just an observation.

I’d be interested in a review of the battle. Were the defenders outnumbered and outgunned, or just cowardly and half-hearted, as they appear to have been during the initial ISIS gains in Iraq?

I was wondering the same thing.

Baghdad is just 80 miles east of Ramadi.

We are either going to have to get more involved or this country is going to break apart. It’s that simple. It’s obvious to most clear thinking people that the current strategy of dropping a few bombs isn’t going to work.

Misleading title....

A pullback means a orderly withdrawal.....

The Iraqi forces dropped their weapons, left tanks and missile launchers and ran.....

ISIS seem to be Sunni. At some point Iran will draw the Shite line.

The only logical outcome is for Iraq to split into three parts. The Turks and Saudi Arabia might not approve. So what. They’ve been playing the ISIS and Syria meltdowns of civilization for what’s best for them, so let them sort it out.

I vote for let the Iraqis fight and win their own revolution

meanwhile let the “caliphate” experience roll on, since so many arabs and muslims have yearned for it

just don’t let the cowards and hypocrites (the muslims) flee to western countries to isolate themselves in sharia ghettos and raise another generation of western hating snakes

The media down’t want to cover this story, it proves Obama was wrong to pull out of Iraq and now millions are being massacred - will the media focus on that?

"The only logical outcome is for Iraq to split into three parts."

So we in the world community then recognize the legitimate government authority of ISIS? That is in effect what you are saying. Oh, and by the way, they have a good part of Syria also, so I guess we just give them that. And I guess they will be satisified after we give them all of this, right? They won't try to invade other SUNNI dominant areas like Jordan, right? And when Turkey invades the new Kurd country, (as they have stated in the past that they will do if the Kurds are ever allowed to have their own country) we just let that happen also, right? Who knows what consequences ensure after that.

This was one country and relatively peaceful by the end of 2009. We could have kept our thumb on top of the sectarian violence if we would have stationed the 15,000 troops there as the Generals recommended in the first place. When Obama said we'll keep 3,000, Malaki knew he did not have a serious negotiating partner (which he didn't) and he went his own way (by demanding the unreasonable SOFA requirements).

Bush won the war, Obama lost the peace. Every successful transition from war to peace has required us keeping troops there (Germany, Japan, Korea).

“The media down’t want to cover this story, it proves Obama was wrong to pull out of Iraq and now millions are being massacred - will the media focus on that?”

And that is the gotcha question to the Republicans. If you go against Bush and say we should never have gone in, you wind up with this. If you say we should have gone in, you wind up with this.

A loser across the board. The real answer is, “I would have finished the job in 1991.”

Bravely bold Sir Robin
Rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die,
Oh brave Sir Robin.
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin.

He was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into a pulp.
Or to have his eyes gouged out,
And his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split
And his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangled
Brave Sir Robin.

His head smashed in
And his heart cut out
And his liver removed
And his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped
And his bottom burnt off
And his pen—

“That’s... that’s enough music for now lads,
*** looks like there’s dirty work afoot*** ???.”

Brave Sir Robin ran away.
(”No!”)
Bravely ran away away.
(”I didn’t!”)
When danger reared it’s ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
(”no!”)
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
(”I didn’t!”)
And gallantly he chickened out.

****Bravely**** taking (”I never did!”) to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
(”all lies!”)
Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Robin!
(”I never!”)

So what's the solution? I'm one of those who doesn't think we should've toppled any of those Mideast dictators. I don't know why, after not disintegrating ISIS when the US could've done that, we didn't switch allegiance to Assad. Why did the US unfriend him, anyway? He defended Christians and other minorities and ran a civilized country.

I just don't know how it's solved. Now, Sunni has come to mean a government that will lay down their arms to ISIS. And the Kurds? Well, yeah, the Turkish Kurds are going to want to join an independent Kurdistan. Good....they're the only ones who have been unequivocal in opposing ISIS.

At this point, Europe and the US have to worry about our own survival. And the DC crowd is STILL finding ways to inundate us with invaders and to ship jobs overseas.

There's no good answer. Want to put Iraq back together? It'll take a ruthless dictator. And who wants that?

Hey, but we got the Accountant!! CNN devoted many hours to this operation!

The White House said President Barack Obama ordered the raid that killed the Islamic State figure identified as Abu Sayyaf, who helped direct the group’s oil, gas and financial operations.

But, 0bama had to gloat/stomp on the Military loss to ISIS. 0bama went and told the world contacts and records are currently being exploited, giving time for ISIS associates to disappear.

0bama, once again showcasing his shite Midas touch

When these reporters ask the question, should we have gone to war in Iraq, the proper answer is after we won the war, we should not have pulled out and lost the peace. That’s the answer to the Iraq question. It was on it’s way to being a liberal democracy. Was it perfect? No, but with our continued guidance we could have helped it stand on it’s own in time. It was stable when we pulled out.

As for what to do now, that is going to be up to the American people I suppose. If we abandon them, it will send a message to all of our allies, especially the ones in the middle east. Saudi right now is trying to get a bomb from Pakistan. Do you think the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a good idea? Every decision has it’s consequences, whether it’s action or inaction. Inaction or desertion will have far greater negative long term impact on us than action. Think of post Vietnam, the Kmher Rouge, the killing fields, Soviet Union on the march in Afghanistan and Central America. These were all decisions that were (I believe) the consequences of us deserting South Vietnam after we signed the Peace treaty in 1973. Again, we left a stable functioning government and had a residual force to help them. We then cut off funding to the South Vietnam government in 1974. We abandoned them. It’s no coincidence that North Vietnam invaded in early 1975. They read the tea leaves also.

I saw the video, it was a “withdrawal” in the same vein as when the woman says “here comes my husband!”
