My dad was the gunnery officer for the port 5" battery on USS Iowa during the Korean conflict. His crew wiped out the communist Winter ammo supply at Wonsan Harbor on Sept 22, 1952. Dad was always fond of the big 16 inch guns, but his crew was very precise with the 5". On a "battle efficiency" test, his crew was shooting inert rounds. The commanding officer at the range offered his personal jeep as a target. Big mistake. The 5" round took it out. That almost cost them a loss of the "meatball" flag.
