Senators: Pentagon Shouldn't Pay NFL for Patriotism
National Journal ^ | June 4, 2015 | Rachel Roubein

The Senate wants the Pentagon to stop paying the National Football League to publicly salute soldiers, hold pregame reenlistment ceremonies and perform on-field American flag rollouts.

The chamber on Thursday approved an amendment from Sens. John McCain, Jeff Flake, and Richard Blumenthal to the annual defense authorization bill that would not only end this practice but require NFL teams to return the millions in past payments and give them instead to charities supporting troops, veterans, and their families. This practice, which has been dubbed "paid-for patriotism" by critics, has cost the DOD nearly $7 million over the last three years, according to McCain.

Taxpayers get soaked for their stadiums and we have to pay for their wonderful “patriotism” which they have the nerve to project as their charity. Unbelievable.

Totally agree! As much as our VA is wasting money on that going “green” bullcrap, this is even more of an outrage!

Roger Goodell needs to be fired from his position and a total overhaul of league “management” must take place!

It makes perfect sense. The government is supporting its armed enforcers. Why is anybody surprised at that? It’s all about the government and the collective these days.

When my son was active duty Marines, he participated in several Iwo Jima flag planting re-enactments on centerfield at half time at NFL games. My son described the opportunity to do so as quite a rush to be receiving all that applause!

Didn't realize the government had to pay for the privilege.

FReegards!

It wasn’t for all teams or all games, most teams were doing the pre-game ceremonies anyway. If the pentagon is offering teams money to do something they’re doing anyway, what owner is going to say no?

On top of that, it IS good recruitment! Aimed directly at the demographic they want. $7 million over 4 years is nothing to the advertising department of an agency as large as the pentagon.

This make me detest the government and those who run it all the more. Insinuating the government into every aspect of our lives. Despicable. Militarizing a sporting event. Despicable.
Up until the very end the USSR kept WWII alive as though it ended the previous week. It was all about veterans. Newlyweds went right from the ceremony to a war memorial to place her bouquet to honor the troops. All to keep the people respecting and in awe of the government. Be grateful to the government that keeps you safe.
Military at a sporting event is appropriate for a totalitarian country. Very North Korea.
We need the government out of our lives. Certainly out of our sports.
