Women trained to resist sexual assault far less likely to be raped: (Canadian) study

Female university students who completed 12 hours of training on resisting sexual assaults experienced far fewer rapes and attempted rapes, according to a new Canadian study.

The study involved 893 female Canadian students who were either given the training -- known as the Enhanced Assess Acknowledge Act Sexual Assault Resistance Program (EAAA) -- or formed a control group where they were asked to read brochures.

One year later, those who took the EAAA had experienced 46 per cent fewer completed rapes (5.2 per cent versus 9.8 per cent) and 63 per cent fewer attempted rapes (3.4 per cent versus 9.3 per cent) than the control group.

Great way to get college credit ... and preserves your chastity ... if you're not carrying a shotgun!

But that would require them to be responsible for their own behavior, and to take responsibility for their actions.

We can’t have that.

I approve. My daughters were trained to resist all assault - several years of martial arts training. If any of them are attacked, I expect them to outrun the attacker(s), or to put the thug in the hospital.

But guns don’t stop crime. They cause it. Right.

Hopefully it also includes the simple concept of being aware of your surroundings. IMHO.. there are a lot of young people who aren’t taught this by their parents and feel the world is “safe” (when nothing is further from the truth). They see nothing dangerous about running on a secluded bike path in the early morning or late at night. They will walk to their car.. unescorted. If this educates them about the dangers.. then it isn’t a bad thing. IMHO.

Those numbers are horrifying and should bring shock to anyone who reads it. 1 out of every 10 women in this study who did not go through this training was raped in a one year period.

1 out of 10 women were raped in a one year period.

Even of those women who took the training, there were 1 out of 20 women raped.

Even if all 893 women had been given the training, that would mean that 44 of them were raped in the one year since the study began.

Now there may be arguments that what they claimed was rape may not have met a reasonable definition, but even at 10% of the total reported, that is still a very high number.

I can’t imagine a parent sending their daughter off to college knowing that there is a 10% or even 1% chance that she could be raped in any given school year.

I believe that forcible rape should be a capital offense. Not completely buying into the “rape culture” that many are espousing yet. I need to see better studies. But I will say this, the cesspools that Universities have become in terms of teaching morality and proper civilization probably have a lot to do with the attitude that many students have towards sexuality and power.

Women with a gun and know how to use it are almost never raped.

I can’t buy the numbers. They don’t pass a smell test...so this entire thing means nothing imo.

The old 6-inch hatpin in the rapist’s eye or neck is still effective, and you can’t be arrested for carrying a weapon in blue states. Too bad women’s hats are out of fashion!

“63 per cent fewer attempted rapes”

So the rapists didn’t even approach them?

Not even their boyfriend rapists?

Assess: This unit focused on improving women’s assessment of the risk of sexual assault by male acquaintances and developing problem-solving strategies to reduce perpetrator advantages.

So profiling is a taught skill? Sounds racist/sexist.
PS Women rape women too.

Acknowledge: This unit assisted women in more quickly acknowledging the danger in situations that have turned coercive, explored ways to overcome emotional barriers to resisting the unwanted sex, and practiced resisting verbal coercion

So they should consider the lewd banter and taunting. One recent girl on girl murder case was claimed an “accident” by the killer. They’d both been drinking, the victim said it was just an ‘experiment’ (which the killer took as rejection) and was choked to death (either by an arm lockhold or an object).

Again women can date rape and kill too.

Sexuality and Relationships: This unit provided sexual information, including the slang and scientific terms for a wide range of possible sexual activities, safer-sex practices and strategies for sexual communication.

Do they know that Planned Parenthood had some staffers encourage ‘bored’ minor females to try sadomasochism to spice up their sex lives? Taught them about safe words because to PP “no doesn’t always mean NO”?

WOW! I never knew that Canada was heavily populated by rapists.

And here I thought that Canadians were so nice that everybody should have one for a pet.

When the science finally comes out I’ll bet there’s a direct causal relationship between hockey and rape. And maybe global warming.

I’m all for educating them to examine their surroundings (environment as well as social circumstance and potential suitors) as well as training them in self defense and protective maneuvers.

No one should have to go through it.

And while the focus is on those attending colleges, there may not be an increase in chance of victimization simply because of attending a college.

You didn’t mention walking alone with earphones on, totally oblivious to their surroundings. They can’t even hear if somebody is walking up behind them

How many times have you seen a woman.. running/jogging alone with ear phones on? I have... many, many times. Makes me cringe! Prevention techniques may not be “PC” but they are extremely valuable.

Maybe someone should give this info to the ladies in Sweden. I understand the impending Islamic takeover includes brutal and frequent rapes of their women.

Their government and media don’t seem to care a whole lot. Mmmm...government and media working together to the detriment of its people - sounds familiar.

These numbers seem inflated, 9.9 + 9.3 = 19.2 call it 20%

20% of all adult females get sexually assaulted in one year? Wow. Actually more if you throw in the 5.2 and the 3.4.

It’s much more common than we know

I’ve never met an attractive woman that wasn’t sexually assaulted. Not all were “rape raped” but all were at least held and fondled unwillingly. Mostly at school or work during a moment alone with a male they knew. It rarely happens in the streets.

Most don’t talk about it because it’s very hard to produce evidence in such a case and they would rather move on
