Years ago I was yelled at by a Hispanic man for calling America, “America”, instead of the United States since he thought claiming “America” was arrogant since I didn’t mean South America too.

I’ve heard the “America” complaint, too. Here’s the deal: U.S.A. stands for United States of AMERICA. America is in the name. The other countries do not have it in their name. Everyone knows what you are talking about. It is normal to shorten a name. Why must we be forced to Say United States instead of America? No one means America the country is the same thing as North America or South America the continents. No one is confused by it. Those with a perpetual chip on their shoulders just see an opportunity to make it into something it isn’t. I refuse to submit.
