The Druze community in Israel is on high alert Sunday, after Al Qaeda massacred 20 Druze in Syria - a move the community has deemed a "red line."
"Israel's policy is that it will not intervene in Syria, and we accept that with understanding and love," former minister Salah Tarif, who served in the 12-16th Knessets as part of Labor, stated to Walla! News. "We will also not interfere, but we do have red lines."
"We are operating now as a form of witness, as a religious entity to protect our brothers," he added. "We are 'at the ready' like a Tzav 8 (reserve call-up in the IDF during an emergency - ed.), so that if there is something that will require our intervention, we will not hesitate to do it."
Tarif noted that a lot of Israeli Druze have immediate family on the Syrian side of the border, and that they were willing to cross into Syria to protect their relatives - and specifically "women and children" - "without hesitation."
"It happened during the civil war in Lebanon, when there were clashes between Druze and Maronites - and here it may occur with greater intensity," he added.
The most threatened area for the Druze is now Jabal al-Arab, a mountainous region in southern Syria where five Druze were killed in clashes with Islamic State (ISIS) earlier this month. Druze leaders argue that their friends across the border have no means of self-protection after Assad's army moved into the area.

Moderate Muslims have a short life expectancy, so do not get to breed much. At most, it’s an anomaly of Muslim, quickly eliminated by others, and not an independent subspecies. Arm the Kurds, who are the closest to “moderate” Muslims that you’ll find. Arm the Eastern Christians, Bahai, Zoroastrians, Yazidi, Bedouins (they’re mostly apolitical), Druze, Samaritans, communists, too. EMA (Eastern Minorities Alliance) is happening before our eyes. Shit. Start a Crusade. Onward Christians soldiers, and all that. I can bet Israel will be willing to play a discreet but decisive role in all this.
Sounds good to me! But is there any chance Kurds could turn extremist islam. I am embarrassed to say up until a few days ago, I did not know they were muslims. I’ve read of several honor killing in their areas, and they can be quite brutal, which now, is a good thing.

Me neither. My actual knowledge of Kurds is small. They need help, though, against Daesh, Al Qaeda, Assad, so that makes them potential allies. Alawites, too. Being Muslims, they can’t be trusted far. Also, linguistic problem is strategically easier. Christian and Jewish Kurds speak colloquial Aramaic, which every Yeshiva boy and Jesuit knows. This makes it worth the Kurds’ while to tolerate its own minorities, if only for communication purposes.

I didn’t know anyone still spoke Aramaic. Isn’t that what Jesus spoke?
Had a Kurdish Jewish friend in Kiryat Arba. He told me about the Aramaic. Sure. Jesus spoke it, the Talmud, Zohar and parts of the Bible are written in it, and many read the Five Books of Moses in portions every week, reciting each verse twice in Hebrew and once in the Aramaic translation of Unklus the Convert. Still spoken in remote places in the Middle East. Coming back into vogue among Eastern Christians in Israel, who are sick of being bullied by the PA and then told that they are Palis, too, so they better support their fellow Arabs while they steal land, harass and rape wives, etc.

Doubt there will be an organized intervention, but if they organize for one, I hope Israel supports them. Worth noting that Druze is a religion which split from Islam a millennia ago. Some ethnic Druze may be Christian but it not a Christian sect.
