BOSTON A confrontation that began on Boston's famed Esplanade led to a deadly police-involved shooting on the Silber Way Footbridge over Storrow Drive Friday afternoon.
The incident that involved both Boston University and Massachusetts State Police ended with officers shooting and killing a suspect.
Police were following a man armed with a knife who was making threats, a witness told NewsCenter 5's Janet Wu. The woman said she heard four shots fired by police.
Boston University police were investigating the incident on the Esplanade and called State Police to assist.
Dr. Elizabeth Thompson, an oncologist on a professional visit to Boston, was driving on Storrow Drive when she said she saw a "large man" walking toward the road followed by police officers with guns drawn.
Thompson took photos showing two police officers following a shirtless man.
No information was released on the person killed.
Police crime scene tape could be seen from Live Sky5 cordoning off a large portion of the nearby Esplanade.
Looks Quaker to me.
Don’t know the story but this photo does not show aggressive behavior by the man being followed by the police.
Yup! The Amish and Quakers will be rioting tonight!
Boston Strong.
Must be a liberal. Brought a knife to a gunfight...
and looks like he’s trying to walk away
Ch 5 tweet:
State Police believe man was wanted on outstanding warrants; ran when approached by authorities
balding, healthy (abs) youngish (30?), not in a hurry ... carrying a knife, tats
Ch 4 Boston:
At one point, according to Davis, the man approached officers, who were yelling for the man to drop the knife.
Davis said it was at that point that police shot and killed the suspect.
During a press conference, state police said the suspect has a lengthy criminal history
It was a state police trooper who fatally shot the man.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Nate Reddi was working out on the exercise equipment on the Esplanade when the scene unfolded.
Reddi said the suspect was also working out in the area and was chased by police.
The man was eventually shot once while threatening officers with a knife, Reddi said.
According to Reddi, the man remained standing after the first shot, but was taken down by three more shots.

I’m surprised they didn’t shut the whole metro area down and tell us to shelter in place.
smoking a cigarette, not much smoked yet .... (just lit up ?) ...
Anyone who runs away from the police when they're told to stop assumes the risk of being shot.
Any one who points something that looks like a gun at police (or anyone else for that matter) assumes the risk of being shot.
Police will stop by any means necessary protests that disrupt others.
Any protestors who try to incite havoc because of these situations will be arrested and jailed for awhile.
I don't know if I'm more fed up with the professional protestors looking for more cities to burn or with those who pander to them.
looks like a piss-poor knife to me
The doctor is an idiot. Taking pictures while driving on Storrow (40 mph dense traffic) is really foolish just to capture police at work. This is the one time I would approve of her being charged under Massachusetts Law of recording police at work.
You cant walk away from police.
