Only in areas not occupied by Union forces, which made up parts of Virginia and Louisiana. It also excluded Tennessee. Those areas had to wait for the 13th Amendment as well.

Every racist I've ever seen says, "I'm not racist. I have lots of black (or white or Asian or whatever) friends." Psycho, yes. No rational person does what he did. But even psychos need a motivation to push them over the edge and for Dylann Roof it was race.

I have to admit that I have some mixed feelings about the Confederate battle flag. As a son of the South, I remember both the good and bad of our heritage. But the fact is that it has been 150 years since the end of the Civil War! Slavery is over! The point I am trying to make is that it is up to the people in each state to decide what flag to use. It is not up to all of the outside pressure of the NAACP, radicals like Sharpton and Jackson, big corporations, or big sports organizations. It's all about the money for these idiots!

The very fact that they insist the flag come down, is reason enough to keep it up.
