It's their illiteracy: They see a shard of newspaper on the ground, they reverently preserve it in case it might be part of the Holy Koran. The modern world is daily thrust into their faces via Al Jazeera. Their brains don't process that it's their anti-intellectual heritage that makes their civilization inferior, their rejection of science and natural law that gives them strange affinity with western leftist progressive anti-intellectual elites.

Imagine you were a young father living in squalor. You are among the 20th or 30th generation living in squalor with no hope out. Into your worthless and unproductive land move a mass of educated, driven, energetic people possessed of the knowledge to make the desert bloom, deliver modern medical service, create jobs for you, educate your children and take your stagnant culture from centuries of ignorance into the modern world. You have the chance to partner with them, work with them and live in peace with them.
