The BBC series of “I, Claudius” from the 1970’s had an episode about how the Roman Emperor Caligula forced the Patricians of Rome to work in brothels or participate in orgies he organized.
I thought at the time - “how ridiculous, what government would organize such things, or who would allow themselves to be forced into such things.”
Now I know better. I see how such things could happen, and I can also understand how well-off citizens, in positions of power and much to lose would submit themselves to a random government that could take everything from them.

Elections have consequences. When you elect people you give them power over you. When you elect bad people you give them power to tyrannize you. We have voted in our own little Caligulas.
