I can’t figure this polygamy thing out. Maybe it's a divide and conquer type of thing. The wives can bicker at each other and then the husband can step in and play at reconciler. I doubt that would work in real like though.

You may be on to something. Perhaps the simpler explanation is that they spend so much time bickering amongst themselves that they leave him alone.
