I don't think you misinterpret me: I am trying to explain to some Trump haters here that, yes, he is a liberal on many, many issues; yes, he endorsed BO in 2008; yes, he's said all sorts of things I don't agree with. But what explains his incredible popularity, including with a number of conservatives? Two things: he is unequivocally against FURTHER illegal immigration and his only real promise is to build the fence and make Mexico pay for it; and he is standing up to every single media source or Chamber of Commerce type who is trying to shut him up. He hasn't apologized and can't be embarrassed.

That will only get him so far, but as of now it gets him ahead of every other candidate because Cruz has said that AFTER the border is sealed we can "have a discussion" about those illegals remaining. I take that to mean some sort of "path to citizenship amnesty." So, at the first turn, Trump is in the lead about about four lengths over Cruz, and the rest of the pack is about 20 lengths back. Now, Fiorina is a sleeper.

I'm just saying that in the short run Trump could increase his lead to about 10 lengths if he said something like we need to CUT the number of H1-B visas and that "no American should ever have to train a foreigner to take his job." I think THAT line would win him 20 million votes.

But I'm not naive. Trump has NO position so far on virtually any of the other hot-button issues, including ISIS ("I'll find the right general" isn't a strategy, it's a prayer).

I believe that Cruz is on record as saying he would never agree to a "path to citizenship". After all is said and done, though, he is open to an arrangement where some illegals would be allowed to stay under certain circumstances. But they could never become citizens.
