WESTLAKE VILLAGE Water from a public hydrant that Tom Selleck has been accused of stealing from in dry California was legally purchased, an official said.
The Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County sued the "Magnum, P.I." star, alleging that a tanker truck filled up at the hydrant and took it to Selleck's 60-acre ranch more than a dozen times in the past two years.
The district announced a tentative settlement with Selleck on Thursday.
Jay Spurgin, public works director for Thousand Oaks, said a construction company paid a fee to secure the rights to draw water from the city hydrant two years ago. About 1.4 million gallons of water were taken from the hydrant during that period.
"There was water used during that time, and it was paid for," he said.
Construction firms and contractors can obtain special meters that allow them to haul water from hydrants for large projects. Companies can draw as much water as they need or sell it to a third party as long as they pay the monthly service charge and water bill, Spurgin said.
The water meter in question was removed in June.
It's unclear if Selleck or his employees bought the water from the company or another source. A representative for Selleck didn't immediately return a request for comment on Friday.
The water district said it spent nearly $22,000 for a private detective to investigate.
District officials declined to provide details of the tentative settlement, which has to be approved by the water board next week.
California is grappling with a persistent drought, and the community where Selleck has his land is under mandatory cutbacks as high as 36 percent
Tom, get out of Leftafornia asap. A conservative gentleman like yourself has no business having to deal with what is coming soon to that insane state. ‘Jesse, get out of there!’
And we wonder why government has runup trillions of debt.
Doesn’t matter...the media already has CONVICTED HIM. It’s over.
Amazing....I'll bet Selleck has a good story to tell about all this.
I knew these accusations were rubbish, because if he had been guilty they would have arrested him, his wife and the truck driver for felony theft.
There has been a rumor floating around for years that Selleck is or was at sometime a Freeper, have no idea if it is true.
He has always seemed to be a decent, honorable man.
My water bill is about 0.6¢ per gallon, with most of that being sewer. So let's figure 0.25¢ per gallon for just the water. 1.4 million gallons would be $3500. Even if California is higher, I doubt it comes close to the $22,000 investigation cost.
He is a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and was attacked by Rosie O'Donnel on her show for making a commercial for the NRA when he showed up to plug a movie.
That, in turn, hurt K-mart (at the time the nations single largest seller of firearms) for whom O'Donnel was a spokesperson. Her career (as a comedian) suffered, and K-Mart went into the crapper because gunowners demanded she be cut loose or they'd boycott the store. That boycott really started the K-Mart death spiral.
Back to Tom Selleck. I agree he seems honorable, and I have always enjoyed his roles in movies (esp Quigley down under and television where he plays characters who seem honorable as well. Glad to hear that he was on the up and up, and it's a pity that likely won't get near the publicity as the original charge.
Wow. Magnum, P.I. is ancient history. I guess they didn't want to mention any movies or the current series Bluebloods.
“scratchin my head about a settlement if the water was paid for.”
The settlement may be how much they have to pay Tom Selleck for the false accusation.
I hope Selleck is among the group meeting with Trump this weekend.
That is giving Government Officials [Bureaucrats] credit for something they do not have, To Wit} Common sense. All they know how to do is follow orders. If the orders state you are to go into the gas chamber and then the ovens; into the gas chamber and oven you go. No questions asked, and without hesitation.
When I worked for a lawn service during HS, we attached our meter to a hydrant. The owner took it in a couple times a year to pay for the water we used.
Nope. I think you lost a cent to dollar conversion. My water (without the sewer fee) is about a quarter cent per gallon.
0.25¢ = $0.0025.
1,400,000 x 0.0025 = 3500.
The thing is that this was on the National News, they will not be doing the followup to clear Tom Selleck’s name. That PI should refund the money and turn his license in, what a Moron!!!!!!!!!
Not guilty !
Here they have a means to lock them on the hydrant which they often do especially if they will be returning or have other trucks returning frequently.
HA! Only fair.
