Defiant Sweetcakes owners have until Monday to pay crushing $135k fine

After getting hit with a financially-crushing $135,000 fine last week for their decision to not bake a cake for a lesbian wedding, the Christian owners of the Oregon "Sweetcakes by Melissa" bakery say they have until Monday to pay up, or else the state of Oregon could place a lien on their home.

The punishing fine was levied by Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industry against the couple for unlawful discrimination against a same-sex couple.

They must pay in full by Monday with "personal property" rather than only business assets and the fine "has the potential to financially ruin" the family of five, according to business owner Aaron Klein. Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian "knew that full well going into this," said Klein.

Baking a cake for a lesbian wedding violates their Christian beliefs, the Kleins say, and they plan to appeal. However the fine hangs over their heads in the mean time.

"This is intimidation and bullying — that's exactly what it is," Klein told Fox News in an interview." They are trying to strong-arm me into handing over $135,000 to the two girls and if I win on appeal — they will never pay me back."

the person who determines whether or not to stay the order is Avakian, the same man who levied the fine and enacted the gag order.

Welcome to Oregon, bend over.

I’d like to see about 50,000 local citizens surround this place and tell the officials to pound sand. (among other things)

How can the state demand payment when the case is being appealed ?

This will probably go to the State Supreme court and maybe even SCOTUS...

The two homos will be waiting a long time for their money...

These punitive fines will lead ultimately to civil disobedience and perhaps even violence I think.

Ultimately, at some point the Govt will learn they don’t have a monopoly on the use of force.

I sure hope rational minds prevail.

Avakian - seizing a persons property without due process of a trial by their peers? Isn’t that a capital offense when it their home or place of business?

What does it mean “personal assets” and not “ business assets”?

Why does it matter which bank account the money comes from? Especially for a small, family owned business?

Cruel and unusual punishment for Christians is fine with this ungodly state. God’s judgment will be harsh. It would be wise for followers of Jesus to get out of that accursed place now, because they are not safe.

This country ceased to be a republic when the legislature(s) ceded their responsibility to make laws and gave them to bureaucrats.

When unelected bureaucrats can write, at their whim, “regulations” that have the force of law, regulations that can deprive people of their freedom, their liberty, and their property, then there is no republic. And we arrived at that place quite some time ago, it’s just that the reality hasn’t sunk in for most people.

A few of us older folks remember when some businesses would have a sign at their entrance that said “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.”
Even the cafes had “no shirt, no shoes, no service” signs.
So does that mean that now shoeless, shirtless persons would instantly become a victim class?

Why have not their lawyers moved for a stay to the appeals court awaiting the outcome of the appeal?

That only works for libliars. They can ignore court orders and subpoenas as they wish with no repercussions. GOD loving conservatives, not so much. Property seizure? Maybe. Is the irs looking at their back taxes yet?

Avakian has a day with destiny he will not relish...

He reminds me of the the verse "Pride goes before a fall"

He will fall hard...

I have to believe the people of Oregon even the left wingers find his behavior abusive and he is power mad...

Even left wingers know a power mad government employee is never a good thing
