President Obama on Monday commuted the sentences of 46 drug offenders in federal prisons, as part of his administration's effort to reform the criminal justice system.
Obamas clemency to non-violent drug offenders comes as the administration is working to reduce operating costs and overcrowding in federal prisons, as well as to provide relief to inmates who were sent to prison under the harsh sentencing guidelines put in place in the late 1980s as the country was grappling with the crime and violence associated with crack cocaine.
Since the Obama administation announced last year that it would grant clemency to nonviolent drug offenders, more than 35,000 inmates or about 16 percent of the federal prison population have applied for early release.

Well, as a druggie himself, of course he would want to release some more choom gang buddies.
I wonder if this is related to the “Three Strikes” rule.
They should be required to move in next door to the 46 democrat Senators.
Those ‘non-violent’ drug offenders pick up a lot of ‘violent’ advice from others in prison.
A Willie Horton moment will eventually occur.
Just wait until the last hours of the Obama administration, especially if the R’s win the presidency.
Great! Now who’s going to do the State’s job and get rid of the murderers and child molesters?
Any news on the racial distribution of these 46 people? Does it EXACTLY match the racial distribution of the prison population? Inquiring minds want to know.
LOL! I seem to remember someone making this call the other day when it was first announced that the lyin’ king was going to jail. Only problem is he isn’t “going” to jail.
What would Dukakis do? What would HYuckabee do?
Pardon me.. I ain’t kilt nobody lately..
Looking for a list of those affected..
Did the freedom rider get his ? Or was it only drug related?
Every non violent drug offender should be released.
The WoD has been a total failure.
“(Len) Bias was a two-time ACC player of the year and was the conference's athlete of the year and a consensus first-team All-American in 1986. The Boston Celtics drafted him with the second pick, but he died two days later from cardiac arrhythmia induced by a (crack) cocaine overdose.”
Now we just accept these deaths in the African American community the same way we accept the daily fratricide in the inner cities and lately the hate crimes that no one will acknowledge against whites who “trespass” into the tribal territories. When dozens are standing around and laughing and joking while 2-3 are stomping a guy who can no longer defend himself... That is a hate crime!
Then he will buy your neighbor’s home and give to these druggies for a place to stay.
Every single one of them was black, right?
But just wait, this is the beginning:
he’s later going to do that for every black prisoner in the federal prison system.
And the last thing he will do is banish all US nuclear weapons.
Were these people he released just users or dealers that were caught selling and didn’t have any weapons on them when they were caught.
The doper-in-chief taking care of his doper friends.
Right -or maybe get invited to “O’s” daughters’ parties.
The Choom Gang gains new members.
ISIS recruits?
I doubt there are many (if any) people who get sentenced to life for mere possession of drugs (of any kind). Following the link, I see that some were sentenced for operating a meth lab, some for tax evasion, etc. Even those sentences were probably based on a plea bargain where there was a guilty plea to a charge and they dropped many other charges.
Lord only knows what's in these people sealed juvenile records.
