Scott Walker Wants To Cure His Party Of Its Weakness For Moderates

Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin has a realistic shot at becoming the most conservative Republican nominee for president in a generation. Walker, who used a campaign video and a tweet to announce Monday morning that he is an official candidate, has been leading in Iowa polls since late January and has been consistently in the top tier in national and New Hampshire surveys. At FiveThirtyEight, we’ve had him in the top tier, with about a 25 percent chance to win the nomination, since February.

Walker has been so successful with the conservative base because of his actions as governor. He is best known for signing legislation in 2011 that limited the bargaining power of Wisconsin’s public-sector unions, which prompted a labor-led recall attempt in 2012. Walker won that vote and was re-elected in 2014.

He also led the state’s rejection of Medicaid expansion under Obamacare — Wisconsin was the second-most-liberal state (based on presidential election results) to say no — and he helped pass a strict voter identification law and cut taxes.

Walker has doubled down on that conservatism during his presidential bid. He is about to sign a ban on abortions after 20 weeks, called for a constitutional amendment to allow states to ban same-sex marriage after the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing it, and has withdrawn his earlier support for comprehensive immigration reform.

Both of Walker’s most plausible rivals for the Republican nomination (Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio) did not call for a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage and are in favor of immigration reform.

I know, I love Ted too.

I just think SW has proven himself as a governor.

He is currently in the arena of governing as an executive, has beaten the Demon Rats 3 times in 5 years, and is a guy who has done so while in a state that has gone Democrat for the Presidency in EVERY election from 1988 until 2012.

I think he can win. And I think he is more conservative than most of the field.

Two things about Walker that I don’t like:

Brad Dayspring is his communications director. That man has trashed the Tea Party.

Medved likes him. Medved is a Rino Decipticon cheerleader.

He’s very conservative.
He’s stumbled on dealing with the “crony-system” though: immigration, subsidized business and such.

Not too late to correct his course but he’s made it harder for himself.

Maybe Walker should start by firing anti-conservative “adviser” Brad Dayspring.

This is directed at no one in particular, and is being said in hopes of bring some refection on the importance of the outcome of this election..

We have won and lost the last 4 National elections in a row within 4% points, primarily because of dissatisfaction within our own ranks and directed at our own candidates..

That dissatisfaction was festered by the rhetoric spurned from within our own websites.. I confess to adding to those defeats with my own contributions..

I truly have no dog in this race, YET, but I expect I will find one that is closer than McCain to my bucket list of qualifications..

That said unless another Ronald Reagan emerges, I will compromise my list to conform to what we get.. However I will jump on any friend or foe, that suggests that we vote for a 3rd party, or write in, or stay home in protest..

We can’t lose this election, there may not be enough resilience left in this Country to survive another 4 or 8 years of a Democrat President..

Can we please get through these primaries, without helping the Left, by destroying every potential nominee?
