Opponents of the proposed removal of Confederate memorials in New Orleans are using social media to organize the fight to keep them where they stand.
What started out as an effort to keep the statue of Robert E. Lee atop his column in Lee Circle, has expanded its mission to include defending all of the statues and monuments dedicated to the Confederacy.
The City Council, at Mayor Mitch Landrieu's request, has begun a formal hearing process that could result in the removal of Lee and monuments dedicated to P.G.T. Beauregard, another Confederate general; Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy; and the Battle of Liberty Place, a bloody confrontation instigated by ex-Confederates who launched a failed coup against Louisiana's Reconstruction government.
Led by Tim Shea Carroll, the "Save our Circle" movement has collected nearly 15,000 signatures on a change.org petition opposing the removals and united 3,465 users in a Facebook group dedicated to the same cause.

Carroll said he feared Landrieu, in an effort to curry political plaudits, was opening a door he wouldn't be able to shut. "This is a very slippery slope. It's a dangerous precedent. Where is it gonna end?" he asked

Why don't they start with former KKK Richard Byrd U.S. courthouse in WV?
I lived on Lee Circle in 1965.
It will end when every street name, park, statue with representation of the Confederacy is wiped out. Next will be Washington and Jefferson, slave owners don’t you know.
One Landreau out (Mary) one to go. Mayor Landreau has much bigger problems in NOLA. Waiting for a Jindal response.
Liberals who want to rename all the Confederate-dedicated venues, streets, monuments and even towns are going to find that the locals are overwhelmingly opposed to not just renaming but the renaming the liberals want.
People who didn’t care about Robert E Lee elementary and famous Confederate high school will oppose Obama elementary, Aziz high school and so forth.
Mary is probably still in the loop on this stuff. She might be the liaison between Valerie Jarrett and the NOLA city government (Mitch didn’t cook this up on his own).
Man, the OFAs are all over this one. (LOL JimbauxSJournal. Stupid yankee.) The locals are having supper, I imagine.

We still need a divorce, 150 years later. If society hasn’t ‘’evolved’’ enough to settle peacefully, I guess we’ll just have to duke it out. But that’s a shame. It doesn’t have to be that way. I know one thing. The left is going to be awfully surprised by the number of our Black neighbors who choose to stay.
Then the Christian Cross.
We need to preserve our historical sites, battlefields, and flags, including those linked to the Civil War, both North and South. They are part of our history.
