Watched an episode of American Experience about the 1977 Blackout in NYC. It started at 9:30PM and by 2:00AM the next morning, about 1500 businesses had been looted and burned. This was not a food or money shortage, just an electrical failure.

The battle of the suburbs will be most interesting. Yes, the urban ferals will first battle it out in the cities. Once those are burned down and the food is gone, those who are left will begin to journey into the suburbs looking for food and supplies. They will run into a bunch of heavily armed middle class suburbanites who know they will be fighting to protect their homes and families. These suburbanites will have had a month or two to build defenses and they also happen to have the power tools, heavy machinery and construction expertise to build some very solid defenses. I think the ferals will be wiped out at this point. The suburbanites will eventually run out of food, start fighting with each other and the cycle will repeat itself with the survivors eventually making their way to the rural regions.
