Democrats Want To Outlaw ‘Unfair’ Work Schedules

In the name of fairness, congressional Democrats introduced a bill Wednesday that would put significant restrictions on how employers schedule their employees.

“This bill is about basic fairness,” Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in a statement. “A single mom should know if her hours are being canceled before she arranges for daycare and drives halfway across town to show up at work.”

Nearly 80 lawmakers out of the House and Senate introduced the measure. The Schedules That Work Act will add restrictions on how employers can schedule their employees. If passed, it would ban employers from putting their employees on call, splitting their shifts, sending workers home with no pay, or punishing them for requesting schedule changes.

[“A single mom should know if her hours are being canceled before she arranges for daycare and drives halfway across town to show up at work.”]

Would that also apply to a single dad?

I have heard of this “going to work and told to go home”, but I wonder how much of a problem it is that the government must get involved. I bet it is very minimum.

So now they are against flex time?

Some people get paid more for being oncall or oncall is a requirement of the job.

This will “help” the economy ..... That extra push off the cliff...

Isn't this something that should be negotiated between employer and employee?
Some people can't take uneven schedules, some can and would welcome the extra bucks.
Don't make any more laws, one size does not fit all.

And this should be a crime against the people of the United States of America that is prosecuted at the federal level?

My god, what has become of the home of the free?

The pubs are in charge, or are they?

As usual, any Republican push back will be seen as another "War on Women" meme, and of course the drive-bys will run with it.

Every consideration known to man has to be taken for "single moms".

Maybe single moms should have made the biggest consideration of all and asked themselves this question, "Is this person worth my eggs and do my future children deserve better?"

Nah, that'd be asking too much of them.

It’s a rotten way to treat the employees when a phone call ahead of time would negate the problem. Is that too much to ask of an employer?

Employees should not be required to report for the job on terms dictated by the employer. That might be inconvenient for the employee. Its racist. Employees should report to work whenever the impulse motivates them. They may have more important things to do. The role of employers is to provide a steady job with great pay and gold plated benefits. Why else would we need employers? Are they stupid?

It is not the place of government, at any level, to legislate this type of crap.

I have heard of this “going to work and told to go home”

Unfortunately, for many businesses - this is a fact of life. How many pancakes will you sell tonight? How many people are going out to dinner on Monday between 2pm and 5pm? Enough to keep the regular full kitchen staff sitting around doing nothing? I don't know, odds are the owner doesn't know and I would beat the steak dinner a Democrat in Washington hasn't gotten a friction' clue either. But, that won't stop them from sticking their nose in this business.

The solution will be more automation, jobs pushed out of the US, businesses closing. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

It is not the place of government, at any level, to legislate this type of crap.

Then businesses need to be pro-active on this before government "fixes" what is probably small problem and makes it into a large problem.
