My dad wasn’t rich, but he was fortunate enough to get one deferment after another until that hellacious war was over. His brother wasn’t as lucky and was drafted. He asked to be assigned to a remote weatherman team in Vietnam. His meteorology classmates all asked to be assigned various other places. Scared my dad and grandparents witless.

He got Australia. They got Vietnam. Several didn’t make it.

I thank God for our troops that served in Vietnam and other wars, but I am grateful my dad was home to help create me.

The way the Vietnam vets were treated on their return was disgraceful. They were considered to be either druggies or baby killers and couldn’t find jobs. Even today, they are thought to be criminals by the progressives. Similar liberal stereotypes are applied by progressives toward Iraq and Afghan vets today. That is one thing that allows Obama to ignor the five vets who died in Chattanooga. Hostility toward the military continues today.
