Hackers have breached a computer network used by the U.S. Census Bureau and have made off with non-confidential information from a government database that has since been published online, the agency admits.
The U.S. Census Bureau is investigating an IT security incident relating to unauthorized access to non-confidential information on an external system that is not part of the Census Bureau internal network. Access to the external system has been restricted while our IT forensics team investigates, Census Bureau spokesman Michael Cook said in a statement on Thursday first published by The Register.
Security and data stewardship are integral to the Census Bureau mission. We will remain vigilant in continuing to take every necessary precaution to protect all information, Mr. Cook said.
Earlier in the week, individuals affiliated with the hacktivist group Anonymous claimed that they had compromised the Census Bureau and had subsequently published the contents of a breached database, the likes of which included hundreds of usernames and addresses, among other sensitive details.

Seems the government has a horrible record on data security. I’d say it’s a good and valid argument and defense for people who didn’t sign up for Obamacare.
> I cant be alone in thinking all these government databases are purposely allowed to be hacked to make America be yet weaker.
Instead of wasting their time hacking the databases they probably just approached The One and told him they’d pay for it. Then a backdoor was conveniently left open. Or maybe they’re setting us up for a new kind of identification system that we carry on ourselves that only the government can read with special scanners and the databases were left open to hackers on purpose. Nothing would surprise me these days...nothing at all
Of course. Barry is letting them. He wants the data taken. He hopes i will be useful when his foreign merc buddies come in to help fight real patriots.
‘Anonymous’ is probably run out of a vacant lab room at NIST.
Just a heads up.

What’s *census*?
They just had an article about that data base last week
and I immediately thought of the women you are talking about Maxine Waters.
“Well, you know, I don’t know. And I think some people are missing something here. The president has put in place an organization that contains the kind of database that no one has ever seen before in life. That’s going to be very, very powerful. That database will have information about everything on every individual in ways that it’s never been done before.”
Yes! Thanks for finding that quote.
Authorized by Obama again.
Wait until they blow open the Fed healthcare database.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Yes, on please. Thank you.
I thought it was one of the few things the government does that is actually Constitutional.
*************************************
The Constitution only requires an enumeration of people; nothing else.
The article says the hacking got user names. Impossible, as no census form requires such information!
I made some big changes to my status at the last Census.
*******************
Why submit more information than the Constitution requires?
It was a test of the system to see some of the places that end up with the data and timing of same. The Census deserves only accurate name, rank and s/n.
They got our names and the number in the household. That’s it. I actually threw a long form in the garbage once, don’t remember when, and never heard from them.
I tossed the forms, but I did have a couple of Census Bureau hirees come to my door. I live in a tough neighborhood, so it's not wise to open the door for anyone unless you expect company. So these temps would go to my neighbors. My neighbors would tell them I was at work. No matter what time of the day or night these census takers would come by, they were told I was at work. Finally, they gave up.
