Apparently Kerry only revealed his daughter’s marriage to an Iranian-American once he had taken over as Secretary of State. But the subject never came up in his Senate confirmation hearing, either because Kerry never disclosed it, or because his former colleagues were “too polite” to bring it up.

Politicians, celebrities, multimillionaires and the media are all one big family. They go to the same events, cocktail parties, awards shows, each other’s weddings, etc. And they definitely look down their noses at the citizenry. I am convinced of it more and more every day.

In the tribal societies, including the Middle East, marriages cement alliances. Zarif was probably looking at it this way. The weird thing would be if patrician nose-in-the-air JF Kerry was. It’s cultural for Zarif, it’s perverse and nearly treasonous for Kerry. Very much against the grain.
