Exactly. No pawnbroker here would take one with an altered serial number--that could cost them their license in a heartbeat, for starters.

Okay, note the level of bullcrap and ignorance here: it is ALREADY against FEDERAL law to alter, remove, or destroy a serial number on a firearm.
