The FBI on Monday announced terrorism charges against 23-year-old Harlem Suarez of Key West, Florida, who portrayed himself online as a member of ISIS and allegedly wanted to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil.
Toward this end, law enforcement says Suarez thought he was purchasing an operational backpack bomb for deployment in Florida, but it was actually a dud sold to him by FBI operatives. He was also allegedly trying to get his hands on an AK-47 rifle.
According to NBC News, Suarez told informants of a plan to pack the bomb with nails, bury it on the beach, and then detonate it by cell phone when it was surrounded by tourists, similar to the atrocity ISIS perpetrated in Tunisia. “I can go to the beach at night time… put the thing in the sand… cover it up… so next day I just call and the thing is gonna, is gonna make… a real hard noise from nowhere,” he allegedly told the informant.
Suarez also unwittingly worked with FBI undercover operatives to scope out Fourth of July events in Florida for potential targets, according to his accusers. However, as late as July 19, he was allegedly buying boxes of nails to use as shrapnel and offering one of his undercover contacts $100 to build an explosive device for him, according to law enforcement. When he allegedly took delivery of the device on Monday, the cuffs came out. Suarez has been charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction against a person or property within the United States.

We have to be perfect in our protection. They only need to succeed a few times to RADICALLY change this country.
9/11 showed they just had to succeed ONCE to radically change our civil liberties.
In Key West this would be considered terrorism against homosexuals.
That was a big attack. Thousands dead, buildings demolished etc..
A few soft target bomb attacks like this story, a mall or something and this country changes overnight.
Thank the FBI this clever terrorist - almost capable of packing a back-pack with store-bought items and low explosives - was nabbed! Had his right-wing Republican plot succeeded I would proudly support a ban on beaches, backpacks, general hardware, and suspicious local residents (excluding homosexuals, illegals, local politicians, and even those who may fit in less than the three categories.)
We’ve had them (at military bases, Boston Marathon); I think they did everything they needed to do after 9/11 (at least according to Edward Snowden).
We haven’t seen a wave of attacks on really soft targets. Boston notwithstanding.
What I’m talking about is what happens to our country when some group sets off nail bombs at the Mall of America, a beach bar in Key West, another in Penn Station. Or, at some random mall somewhere in middle America that no one would ever think is a target.
Those are soft targets I’m talking about. Ones that really say “It could easily have been you.” and “You’re not safe ANYWHERE.”
Our country would change overnight and not for the better.
A few bombs on soft targets, blow back will be unreal.
I see protest marches at every mosque, every week, nasty as hell, and deserved. What should have happened on 9-11.
Suarez created an ISIS recruiting video inside a Homestead motel.
The script for the video, according to the complaint, was:
“I call to other brothers worldwide to create Caliphate in the Middle East. Destroy our enemies against us. Let live only who are our brothers and sisters. Send our mujahideen to a different soil with tanks, missiles grenades and other tactical needs. America soil is the past, we will destroy America and divide it in two. We will raise our black flag on top of your white house and any president on duty (cut head).

I agree; Patriot Act II would be much worse (at least for those of us here legally).
