What Krauthammer Has Wrong About When Human Life Begins
Daily Signal ^ | August 5 2015 | Genevieve Wood

Posted on 08/06/2015 6:32:16 PM PDT by WilliamIII

I like Charles Krauthammer. But he made some disturbing statements Monday when talking about the Planned Parenthood scandal and reactions to it.

“There is a difference between a fetus and a born adult or child human being,” Krauthammer said on “The O’Reilly Factor” when explaining why those defending Planned Parenthood’s actions thought the way they did.

“I think,” he added, “there is an honest division of opinion in the country between people who believe as you do [referring to O’Reilly] that life and personhood begins at conception and others who believe it’s a gradual process[.]”

If personhood begins at conception, says Krauthammer, “then why don’t we have a funeral at a miscarriage?”

He continues, “There are legitimate arguments that the very early embryo is not to enjoy the kind of protections that a nine-month-old fetus or certainly a child does. You’re working with a small clump of cells and deciding whether you should derive stem cells.”

A few questions for Krauthammer: •What exactly is the difference between a “fetus and a born adult or child human being”? Their location, inside versus outside the womb? Their age?

Life begins at conception, that’s settled science

Consensus might say otherwise, but it would be wrong

I wonder if Krauthammer considers himself a “useless eater”?

"If personhood begins at conception, says Krauthammer, “then why don’t we have a funeral at a miscarriage?”

I know people who have done exactly that.

And, obviously Charles Krauthammer has not known many women who have had miscarriages and felt their palpable grief.

Perched his wheelchair on a slippery slope, he has.

Psychiatrists don’t do embryology.

So you don’t believe that prior to the sperm fertilizing the egg, they are alive?

I saw that on O’Reilly, BOR was right in this, BOR was talking about DNA;

Krauthammer, if I am correct, is a Jew, maybe I’m wrong but unfortunately, if one looks up the Jewish view, it does seem different.

If personhood becomes the lexicon based on a selective criteria, than the slave owners were right to deny personhood to blacks, Nazi’s to Jews and homosexuals, and nations everywhere that engage in similar barbarism.

Personhood is not a label that makes abortion okay. The label that matters is whether it is a human being. It is a human fetus, it is a human being. It is a human zygote, it is a human being.

true. living cells with DNA unique from the host body, that's a separate and distinct life from the mother. which brings up one of those other false narratives that has always bugged me... when feminists and abortionists claim that the anti-abortion crowd is simply men (and women) who want to have control over their bodies. that's nonsense. any women who wants to cut off her arm, or leg, or ear, or whatever... i could care less. her body, her choice. but the fetus is not her body. it's a guest there. any mother who would kill her own unborn child (whether as a fetus or at a more advanced stage of development) is somebody who we absolutely must protect the unborn child from. it's just common sense. that's why women who drink, smoke, or take drugs while pregnant can be punished criminally.

i'm not surprised Krauthammer gets this wrong. he's gone on record stating that he's a sort of atheist that doesn't believe in God, but still fears him.

It’s a LOGARITHMIC slippery slope. Certainly life BEGINS at conception, and that is the starting point. The very first hours and days are perilous, and I’m sure some significant fraction of fertilizations never result in pregnancies, per se. That is, an embryo developing normally in the womb. I suppose one might chose this milestone as a starting part of an individual’s life journey.

So how many cells at 1 week? At least a million, I think, so isn’t the “personhood” of a fertilized cell a moot question by this point? An obfuscation of the violence done to the nascent individual at the many later and increasingly complex stages of development by the deliberate destruction of that individual?

Exactly right!

He ought to know better as a psychiatrist. Those who study family therapy use family trees showing those children in the family tree who died in the womb! That is how important miscarried/still-born children are in the family.

It is most certainly settled Biblical doctrine.

When I said I knew people who have had such funerals I was not talking about “the cousin of my next door neighbor’s brother-in-law’s friend.”

I was referring to my older sister.

And I vividly remember at age 13 going to a funeral with a tiny coffin that seemed barely over a foot long.

I'm not so sure that's entirely true. Isn't there something about "quickening" in there? I thought there was.

From the standpoint of the modern scientific understanding of life processes, I don't see how there can be any question that the life of an individual human, or sea snail, for that matter, begins at conception.
