A day late and a dollar short,as usual.
I want to know why they were denied sidearms as policy.

They are not. FedGov controlled military are.

I bet the TN state-controlled National Guard didn’t have a policy before this.

Because unless the sidearms are issued by the unit, they are not uniform. A small number of any unit (e.g. officers, senior NCOs, machine gunners, etc.) are issued sidearms instead of rifles, and can wear them in uniform. Having a "wear your own" policy makes a mockery of uniformity and military training, and reduces a cohesive unit to a cat and dog rabble. If we want a unit under arms, then have its members draw the issue weapons they've been trained to employ, and wear/carry them while on duty - like a military unit.

Should Lt Cdr White be court-martialed?

And when denied the inherent right of self-defense by our own leaders, many, like LCDR White, do the right thing and carry POWs anyway. Frankly, I prefer my Sigma .40 cal to the Baretta M9.

Absolutely not; it was providential that he was able to retrieve his weapon and return fire, and all should be thankful for that. The question is how to move forward now that a vulnerability has been exploited and exposed, and my preference is for all hands to train as they would deploy by drawing and carrying their T/O weapons while accomplishing their regular tasks.

The SIG-Sauer P239 is standard issue for NCIS and other Fed agencies.

The SIG-Sauer P228 is also known as the M11 ...

Either of these weapons would be fine for stateside sidearms

And they’re “uniform”.

Sig P228/M11 is a superior weapon to the Beretta M9, but is only issued to a small number of special units. (I personally despise the Beretta M9.) Most units are armed with M4 carbines and a limited number of M9 pistols, so until this changes those are the weapons they should be carrying.
