Sen. Ted Cruz said Sunday that doing everything possible to thwart the Iran deal should include states exploring imposing their own sanctions.
The Republican presidential candidate from Texas was asked at a raucous town hall-style forum here about the prospects of states taking action to impose sanctions on the money the Obama administration has agreed to release as part of the deal regarding the country’s nuclear development.
“I think that states should act and lead to do exactly that,” Cruz said.RollCall-On-the-Road-Logo(150x150)
Cruz conceded it could be a tough legal question with some Supreme Court precedent in opposition, but he did highlight his success while solicitor general of Texas in arguing against the George W. Bush administration in Medellin v. Texas.
In that case, Bush had applied an order from the International Criminal Court to state judicial proceedings, like those in Texas. That was upended by the Court in a 6-3 decision.
“The court further concluded that no president, Republican or Democrat, has the constitutional authority to give up U.S. sovereignty,” Cruz said. “So, I think states ought to go down that road. It’ll be a fight. It’s not an open and shut legal argument, but we ought to do everything we can to resist this … Iranian deal.”
Cruz attracted a crowd that was conservatively estimated at 750 at the forum held in a banquet hall south of Birmingham Sunday afternoon. Alabama is the third state on his weeklong swing through the American South that kicked off August 7, the day after the first GOP presidential debate.
No posturing and telling Iran YOU’RE FIRED.....?/s
LOL I love it.
Screw Obama and the cartel.
Which amendment allowed the election of Senators by the vote?
I’m not saying it was a bad thing to change how senators get their seats but it would be a good thing if we could just recall any Senator that would vote for the Iran empowerment Obama bull$hit
It was always up to the legislatures of each state to decide how they want to choose their two senators, so no amendment was needed when, eventually, they all decided to do it by popular vote. They could revert back at any time, or even, I think, come pretty much any inane method they wanted (athletic competition? lottery?) provided that it didn’t violate any other part of the Constitution.
Impose Your Own Iran SanctionsWHAT A LOW LIFE FRAUD
That's a pathetic, weasely cop out after he voted away his constitutional authority to Obama on this issue.
Constitutional lawyer my ass. He's a lying fraud on this issue...And it's an important one.
If I was Netanyahu I'd ream him and the others a new asshole for what they've potentially done to him and Israel.
Indeed it would
recall elections being a tad pricely these days...it would be great if it didn’t economically threaten the state the senator was elected from...to get the job done
You shouldn’t talk with a mouth full of mullah.
You must be looking for the Donald Trump thread. It’s down the hall to the left.
I’d rather that senators were back under the control of the state legislatures. A senator steps out of line and the legislature could recall them inside of a few days. No muss, no fuss and senators wouldn’t get all uppity about who is in control.
I think that’s a great idea.
The States should take back more control, if they would, we might not have the huge debt we have today, and we might not have obumacare...
We might even get common core out of the education system and can tell the government we are not spending our money for government medicare and Medicaid, its’s staying in the States for the people that live there..
Look up Medellin vs Texas. Cruz won before the Supreme Court, arguing for the state over a UN court. The Iran deal has the UN overseeing it. Similar, in a way, to Medellin vs Texas . He talks about it in depth in his book. Since he has already done so, there is a precedent, but I guess you would rather call ugly names rather than have an intellectual argument.
Sadly that’s not how it ever worked. While State legislatures did initially have control over the appointment of Senators, removal of a Senator once in office has always been governed by Article I Section 5:
Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a Member.
thanks, cc- there’s some folks i just ignore.
Surely the good Senator knows that is unconstitutional?
Yeah, that’s dandy. What about the Muslims here? They are the enemy within, the ones attacking us now. And the threat grows daily with all the children they spawn and the thousands more the politicians are bringing in every month. We won’t have a country left to defend.
As seen with the trade enticements to evil nations from states over the years, states won’t do that. And Cruz knows it.
